Some positives

For a rookie UDFA with no rookie minicamp, no preseason, and next to no training camp, Steele was pretty good.

He seemed to have fewer problems than the middle of the oline.

A young T who we can develop is a good deal. I thought Knight was a good deal last year too.

Young oline backups: Steel, Knight, McGovern, Biadasz. I'm happy about all those guys.

Good point he wasn’t our worse OL. That would be Conner Williams. He was manhandled in pass protection all game. He’s an OT playing OG.

Tony Pollard- he’s just a playmaker need to get the ball in his hands often.

With Jarwin out, odds are better that Pollard becomes the 5th man. He's clearly the best skill player on the bench.

Zeke, Pollard, Lamb, Gallup, Cooper are my dream lineup. Our maximal threat, maximal run/pass balance.

Another Positive

Ceedee Lamb
Only nitpicking here but thought he made a rookie mistake by not getting to the first down in his route on 4th and 3. Regardless of playcall he needed to go 3 yards deep instead of 2 yards.

On the fair catch some say he shouldn't have called fair catch but possibly he seen the defender that over pursued.

Like I said, just nitpicking but he looked really good for his first game. Even though her didn't catch it, I thought he gave incredible effort on a Dak pass that was too far out in front of him. Didn't help that the defender was mugging him but to jump out and dive for that ball was nice to see.

He should get 100 yards and a TD next week against the Falcons

That's completely false. Steele and Looney were the worst on the OL. Williams got beat 3 times all game and 2 were against Donald...... which is the first time in 4 total games. Heck, even Martin got thrown around. Just cause he got beat 3 times in 70 snaps doesn't mean he was bad. Steele was getting abused all game long

I do agree about Williams should be playing tackle though.

All in all the defense tightened up in the 2nd half

Offense in the first half was good. We weren't agressive, but we were able to move the ball. I think we really needed to use Elliott more the passing game
I agree re the defense - I don't really know what some people expected from the defense.
We lost our first round All Pro Corner in the off season and our first round linebacker was injured early on.
We had a rookie CB starting who showed promise - he gave up a few big plays but credit to Goff for two perfect throws. He will learn and adjust from that.
So if you break it down we didn't have many premium draft picks on defense.
Aldon Smith was fantastic. To play the way he did without playing much football over the past 5 years was incredible. Kudos to the front office by making a superb free agency signing for a pittance.
The defense gave up two touchdowns but restricted the Rams to several attempted field goals and only gave up 20 points. If someone said to me before the game that the defense would have only given up 20 points then I would have thought wow we actually have a very good chance of winning.

Unfortunately the offense had a load of drives resulting in punts and only put up 17 points. Given where our resources are outlaid - multiple first round picks and huge financial investment, 17 points scored just doesn't cut the mustard.

With this offense we should be scoring an average of at least 27 points a game and really around 30 points.

Other positives.
Eagles O-Line looked horrific versus Washington. Injuries have decimated them again really. Wentz had a poor game - arguably the worst of his career. Their O-Line got owned yesterday. I don't understand why people were so happy with Washington winning because...they are in the same division as us and now that they have a proper HC, they are a danger with that defensive front seven.
Let's see how the Giants look versus the Steelers.
It could be the case that 9-7 will win the division again.

Honestly don't think Aldon Smith in terms of everything was a great positive. He seemed to be more of a liability in the run game than accountable. I get it, he was just back in action so I can forgive him for that, but he was far from perfect. I can easily say the two soar thumbs that stood out that were starters were Jaylon Smith (never wanted him) and Darian Thompson (career backup).

If our OL had La'el and Frederick, we probably would have played much better on offense than we did in game one.

It's sad but our OL is depleted. If it's any consolation, we should only improve, with the passage of time this season.

I'm hoping we'll sign a reasonably competent replacement for LVE in the weeks to come. Clay Matthews, anyone?
