I was a guy posting about "rebuild the trenches" so I had mixed feelings about Day 1.
In the future, my opinion will probably come down to what ends up being better:
Pick 18 - taking the falling Floyd
versus
Pick 31 and taking 99% consensual best Center in draft PLUS the 12th 3rd round pick in draft.
I do think Floyd would probably fit the Cowboys, so really curious why we didn't go there. Despite what Jerry said about his fit (not buying much of that).
Bottom line though, we've STRUGGLED at Center since Gurode, and even Gurode's snaps were an adventure at times....don't forget.
The Intangibles:
Someone else said it - getting the highest ranked player at a position suggests you are going to get a contributor from your pick, not a "project".
I've been saying it for YEARS, but this team needs to get SMARTER! Dumb penalties, lots of mistakes, confusion, etc etc.
If our 1st rounder Travis plays at Center, then you get a Brainiac. Not a small brainiac, A BIG Guy with brains. That helps the line calls and will provide some smarts out there. Both Football IQ and General IQ will be a help to whole line if Travis is making line calls (we've had guards making the calls in past years).
Size - this guy is heavy, and our interior line has been shoved back into Romo's face for a couple of seasons. He will be amongst the heaviest of our line. I like that he isn't driven back much historically. His bench wasn't fantastic, but I heard his explanation and it sounded reasonable. He said his University concentrated on heavier, lower reps in bench - not going for reps at 225. Another poster said Frederick has been squatting 700 pounds since early in his University days. That isn't week, even at NFL level! His highlights show a mauler. I'd like a Center that can hold up at point of attack.
Durable and Versatile - things the Cowboys could use on the oline and all over the line-up. Safer, but not sexy athletic pick. Need filling.
RKG - another clean cut, good attitude, quiet leadership type guy. These are the guys Garrett loves and he fits the personality of the team. You get the idea he's coachable and adaptable.
Let's see how rest of draft falls out. I think we got a "starter" here. Weird draft. I read he was 22nd prospect on Cowboys board - not sure that is true, but if so, the pick is more understandable.
Hope we can add a few more pieces to the puzzle though.
