1. Thank God JJ (or Wade, or whoever) got rid of B Read. This should have been done about a season ago.
I'd also seriously consider bringing in a PK into TC who can consistently kick the ball into the end-zone as another roster player. (I think Carolina did that this season, for example.) Not saying that Folk can't, but I'd bring in someone else as well. Keep Folk for the FGs, and the potential new guy to save us about 7-10 yards of field position on kickoffs. If Folk can do it on a regular basis, then we just keep Folk.
2. I do like the way we have been drafting the past few seasons. So, if JJ is going to change, I hope we don't change too much with what we've been doing in the draft, all in all. Well, if we can figure out how to draft OL, then it's o.k. to alter it a bit.
3. I'm still confused why Wade/JJ aren't upgrading Stewart. I thought Wade had to basically take over the play calling duties the 2nd half of the season? Why wouldn't Wade want to free up his time - like to BETTER coach the team - and hire a DC who can get everyone lined up properly, call the plays, etc?
I guess Stewart also gets 3 years to learn the ropes, like Landry used to do with his players. Still baffles me though . . . .
4. I'm probably in the minority, but I think Garrett will improve his play calling in 2009. In 2007, he got a lot of help from Sparano running the offense. In 2008, he was on his own running it for the first time in his life.
In 2009, he should come into his own. (Maybe that's what Wade is counting on with Stewart? But heck, why not look at Mangini (sp?) or someone?)
5. We need to PLEASE draft/FA pick-up a more stout NT and rotate Ratliff to DE in 2009, we also need to get a decent veteran ILB to replace Z Thomas. Finally, the key to our entire season may be upgrading B Johnson with a decent veteran QB. We can then use our 11 draft picks (including 2 comp picks, most likely) to get a brusing FB, Safet(ies), OL, etc.
6. I thought I'd be over the 2008 season by now, but I'm still down. I am skeptical that 2009 will be better with basically the same cast of coaches and key players.
We haven't been able to win anything significant for years with Flo, Ellis, TO, S RWilliams, etc. Can we finally change now and win something?
If so, JJ and Wade are really going to have to figure things out in a big way and in a hurry.
7. For me, I knew we were in serious trouble when we lost to the Rams. Not only did that loss bite us in the backside for the elusive 10th win of the season, but it really showed what was wrong with this team.
8. I keep thinking how the Falcons turned it around so quickly. Well, a very strong running game (Turner stayed healthy), the strong running game enable M Ryan not to force things too often, and he has his go-to WR. And they got a spark from the STs as well.
9. FINALLY, it could be that by simply improving our STs to a top standard, that will give us an extra win or two a season. So, instead of 9-7, with a top STs, that's 10-6 or possibly even 11-5.
Maybe STs can put us just over the edge, finally . . . . if we can get it right.
