Some Romo Reality - From my point of view

Some thoughts about Romo now that we are getting a larger body of work to evaluate.

Things I really like:

1. No quit - I was really encouraged seeing him want to go no huddle more than once in that second half. A side note, but I was really disappointed to see that Parcells didn't feel the same way. Is it any wonder that the defense looked a little like it gave up, when with 11 minutes to go in the 4th quarter and trailing 42-17 our coach sees no need to go to the no huddle?

2. Moves around the pocket well - In every game he has played, including last night's this is a strength.

3. Moves through his progressions quickly

4. Throws the ball EXTREMELY well on the move. In fact, he throws the ball better on the move than he does in the pocket.

5. Charisma. You can tell that the guy has some of that.

Things that are concerning:

1. If you watch films of Aikman (as I've been doing recently because I'm moving my stuff from VHS to DVD), the arm strength difference is NOTICEABLE. Big time. When Romo has to stand in the pocket and deliver a ball, and has pressure up the middle, his lack of arm strength shows up, as it does when he has to make a pocket throw on deep outs. (my opinion)

2. Sometimes he is so wanting to get the ball out that he makes some really bad decisions. On one important opportunity last night in the second half, you can see him trying to get the ball to Glenn near the endzone, and Ju Jones had come wide open as a dump off in the center of the field. Romo went to the double covered Glenn, when if he had just taken a moment more to look down in front of him he had a wide open back. I know that you will see this WITH EVERY QB in the course of a season, but it seemed it happend a lot last night.

Those are really the only two weaknesses I've seen. You could put them under other headings, such as "he isn't always careful with the ball", but however you label them, this is what I see.

I would also add that if the last two games have demonstrated anything to me, it would be that we don't annoint him too quickly. But having said that, if I had to say how I feel right now, I believe he will be a good QB for us long into the future. Lets hope that's right.

Nice analysis. I agree with almost everything. The only thing I don't agree with is that maybe his not dumping the ball of to the back was a result of him pressing because we became one dimensional. Romo made some bad throws last night. The first pick, if he had waited a little longer, Glenn would have been open for a long bomb and possible TD. Instead, he tried to thread the needle even when Stoutmire read the play and got a running start on the ball. Everything else was just trying to make plays when there wasn't anything there.

One "little" thing that annoys me is we either need to get the plays in faster or he needs to get the guys into and out of the huddle faster.

Again last night, as we saw in some previous games they're hurrying to snap the ball when theres only :02 or :01 on the clock. He's not polished enough to where he shouldnt take more time to survey the defense before the ball is snapped. Not saying he has to wait all day to snap it but I hate seeing him rush like that.

I can agree with you here Sultan. In fact, maybe you could put it this way. Romo has to learn that when you don't have anything, you can't always just try to make it happen anyway. (See Brett Favre)

We looked like we lost interest in winning at around the 8:00 mark of the 3rd quarter.

Too much time left to lose interest. I know it looked bleak, but NEVER give up.

Parcells looked lifeless on the sidelines. I commented to my wife and my boys that he looked like the dead guy in "Weekend at Bernies".

He looked like we had him propped up there in the sidelines with a sick look on his face.:lmao2:

Where is the Parcells we see in clips from his younger days with other teams where he is chewing someone out all of the time.

He's been a huge improvement over Bledsoe. But it is still too early to know exactly what we have in him. I'd still like to see us bring in competition for him next year.

Is it me or does it seem like most of his pass attempts are on the outer 1/2 of the field, with very few if any completions down the middle for more then 10 yards? Also he needs to go back to looking for TO more, on his first interception intended for Glenn the coverage rolled toward Glenn and TO was open for the first down. Seemed like TO had a step on his man most of the night but Romo wasnt looking his way. The Oline needs to step it up as well.

I said this in another thread, but it is puzzling to me that neither Barber or Owens touched the ball in the first half.

I agree with this thread. However, I found myself numerous times yelling at my TV. Romo kept trying to go deep and what we should have doe was get the first down and try to long ball after. Like the post that states that JJ was open when Romo tried Glenn in the endzone. That was a 4th and 4 situation and JJ would have gotten the first.

T.O. was given the ball a lot in the 4th. He just couldnt catch the ball because he was covered very well.

Did anyone see Parcell's face when Romo threw the pass that was almost picked and caught by TO for the TD? He was not happy and neither was T.O.....

I'll add that that particular pass was one of the worst he's thrown...Romo was inaccurate in that Glenn was open and looking over his outside shoulder...Romo totally missed, both underthrowing him and throwing it way inside which was actually bringing it to Stoutmire for the int...if it had been out where it needed to be with some umph to it, Stoutmire could not have gotten to it....really bad pass. Then the int in the endzone was very similar, underthrown badly, with no air under it...some of this was due to rushing and not stepping up into his pass, just flinging it.
