Some teams removing Jimmy Smith from draft board

SI.com's Tony Pauline reports that "a number of teams" have removed Colorado CB Jimmy Smith from their draft boards.


These teams were "so turned off by his character" in Combine interviews that they won't draft Smith if even he falls to the late rounds. How many teams have taken this approach is unclear, but as a top-15 talent it's still possible Smith could be drafted on day one or two. In addition to past failed drug tests and arrests, clubs are concerned with Smith's truthfulness and failure to take "direct responsibility" for his alleged transgressions.

I still think he goes Round 1 simply because a few teams also said they were comfortable with him.

I wouldnt touch him , The attitude alone turns me off . I dont want this punk in my locker room. But the positive drug test will have him in some kind of program from day 1 in the nfl and every relapse (what happens once he gets his hands on some real cash?) will get him suspended . Now maybe he grows up and kicks these habits and becomes an all-pro . But allot of non-football work seems to be ahead for the team that picks him and hopefullt it's not us.

i'm done with the guys with character issues. there is just too much talent in the league to settle for someone who's too dumb to realize that they need to at least be able to present themselves as a professional. if you can't do that, how can i rely on you to take your career and growth seriously? let someone else take him.

I watched Jimmy Smith a lot at Colorado. To be honest, I was not all that impressed with him. He's a good player but I never saw him as a top 15 player and really not even a 1st round pick. I'm not a pro so my evaluations of these things pretty much mean nothing but, I gotta tell ya, I don't see the whole 1st round thing.

He runs fast and he has good size but his speed doesn't really show up on the field like you think it would. He doesn't have great quickness or burst to the ball so far as I can tell. He's strong and he is pretty physical at the LOS but I don't think he has real good change of direction skills. He doesn't transition real well from back peddle to down field coverage. He can also be beaten by a double move if you time it when he's transitioning. He's a decent player but even if his character were beyond reproach, I don't think I would take him in the 1st round. JMO.

Smith is a great player, I have him higher than Prince but Garrett will not want his *** on his team. I don't think he will have players like that on his team. Harris is higher rated on the cowboys list most likely for this reason. If we go CB early 1st-2nd round it will be Harris.
