The pats had plenty of money, actually they only spent on thomas and welker, everyone else came at a discount. Also Tom Brady sacrificed alot less so the team could make improvements.

Pats do not spend of a lot in FA. They are able to get their own guys signed and the FA they pick up have come at a bargin.

The pats don't spend much on free agency. They traded a fourth to get moss and paid him a very reasonable contract, wes welker's contract doesn't get too expensive until the end (and it will be earned). Other than their WRs, it isn't like they get a lot of FAs.

Plus, the Salary Cap is figured out now. It is increasing by millions every year and teams have now discovered how to work it. The danger of the cap from the late 90s/early 00s is over. As evidenced by a dynasty that beat us yesterday.

Can't we get the same players with the same bargains?

They wanted to go to a super bowl contender and that's not Dallas right now.

Sure you can. However they were picking up guys that most would not consider big name players just guys who the Pats felt would fit in to what they are doing. Moss was the biggest name they picked up and that was a risk they were willing to take.

The issue is how well said player fits into your scheme. A lot of times, players are so used to one scheme and know exactly what to do and when another team signs them, they don't adapt the scheme to that player's strengths and it's basically like putting a boxer into a wrestling competition. The real problem comes into play when you are paying a player for their past production and now, you have somebody who can't play as well and you're paying them like they can. That's the issue that the Skins are finding themselves in with Brandon Lloyd.

But the Pats traded for Moss. He wasn't a FA.

I know I only mentioned Moss because he is the biggest name they picked up in the off-season regardless if it was by trade or not

The Patriots paid less on this year's cap for Moss, Stallworth, and Welker than Seattle did for Deion Branch. Maybe even Washington too, I'm not sure. I know Washington and Stallworth are just 1 year deals, though.

That's how. They just don't overpay.

Fair enough.

In all honesty the way the cap works nowadays isn't so much of a detterrent for teams.

There are more loopholes in when you can release players.
Contract structuring and re-structuring, is probably the biggest part of the cap that allows teams like the Commanders, Eagles, Dolphins, even the Patriots, etc, to be able to bring in new FA's year after year and still be under the cap.

We have quite a few ourselfs and I would guess more than what the Pats have.

The thing that bothers me about the dumb cap is this. One of the reasons for it is to create parity in the league. There is no parity in the NFL right now, ya I said it.

The irony of it is there was no cap in the 80's and early 90's and there was more parity in the league then. N.E and Indy, then everyone else? To me thats not parity.

86 the ******** cap and put in a luxury tax, I'm sure Jerry wouldn't mind paying a tax to be in the same league as the 2 team NFL as it is now.

Other than NE, INDY and Dallas, any team can beat any other team. That is parity.

It is no different now than it was in the early and mid nineties.

The top of the league is NE, Indy, Dallas, Pitt, Greenbay. That will probably be around the same at the end of the year.

Middle of the league is NYFG, Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions, maybe the Chargers as they are improving, etc.

Bottom of the league is the Jets, the Vikings, etc.

We pretty much know where these teams stand, and barring a miracle, we know that Indy or NE will likely represent the AFC in the super bowl.

Sure, something could change, but it's been that way for 50 years.

The extreme parity of the NFL was a fluke that occurred the last 8 years or so as teams adjusted to the cap.
