Something I'm wondering about, our real problem on defense

Atlanta has a fast track, and we saw several of those ooh plays from Atlanta, where a player came flying in out of nowhere to blow up someone, not from us.

I don't think we have enough speed in our front 7.

We got bigger on defense.

We got guys that have athletic ability.

But only Ware has that explosion to run stuff down.

James doesn't have it. Akin doesn't. Singleton doesn't. Ellis didn't. Canty doesn't. Spears doesn't. Ferguson doesn't.Burnett might. Carpenter might. Ratliff might. Hatcher appears too.

The defense needs to add some speed.

I agree with that.

Quite frankly I'd be happier with having Ferguson/Canty/Spears play DT with Ware and Hatcher at the ends. I like smaller faster guys at linebacker.

Carpenter does plus he's big, I think Akin does, Burnett definitely does, Hatcher does. The flip side is they weren't worn down in the fourth like most speed defenses and were able to shut down Atlanta.

I agree troo.

Which is one reason Juke and I love seeing Burnett's quickness on the field. ;)

I really think our front 7 personnel would fit the 4-3 better

give me Ware at RDE, Ferguson and maybe Ratliff or a draft pick/free agent at DT, Spears or Hatcher at LDE, Burnett at WOLB, James at MLB and Carpenter at SOLB...make Ayodele a role guy

Watching our linebackers try to cover guys in the flat is flat out comical.

And the fact is that having "bigger guys" sure as heck isn't helping our pass rush. If anything it's worse.

I think we could use more speed at Bradie's spot. Ayodele is called on to take on blocks and the run and has been playing well for the past 2 months. Ware definitely has the speed. Singleton is okay. Part of the problem is mental errors, but the other problem is that teams go after either Bradie or Burnett in coverage.

Ellis doesn't look speedy. I'll agree with you there. But he seemed to get there. I guess it's the long arms and legs that allows him to make plays. His 'playing' speed is deceiving.

We miss Ellis a lot. It may cost us a shot at winning a SB. We can't get pressure on the QB and it's hurting us dearly.

Where is Ogbogu? I wondered about him when the Underarmor ad came on last night.

You'd think his pass rushing ability would have made him a nice add when we had that open spot.

I would make Ayodele the MLB and James the back up.

I'd love a return to the 4-3.

Hatcher/Canty and Ware at DE's. Spears and Fergie at DT.

In the nickel I would bring in Ratliff and Canty Leave Ware and Hatcher on the ends.

I would have Ayodele and Carpenter at outside and James in the middle. In the nickel, I would bring in Burnett for Ayodele and take James out but leave Carpenter in.

How about we address the real issue......we need a new DC. We run the worst 3-4 I think I have EVER seen.

I don't see speed as really a problem, much less our biggest problem. I don't think the problem really is any one thing. It's so many different things, such as a linebacker blowing his assignment or a DB getting beat slightly, or man coverage combined with a blitz leaving the flats open.

Teams have to be in the right position at the right time to exploit those things and lately they simply have been -- some by design and some by our own stupidity.

Did Polite and Ryan ever combine for 4 TDs in a game last year?

Did we ever run a reverse on 4th and 1?

Did we ever call an onside kick with an 18 point lead?

Parcells 2004: Zimmer blitzes more than I'd like.

Parcells 2004: Zimmer's natural tendencies are too aggressive for my tastes.

Parcells 2006: Zimmer gives me his game plan and I tell him, nope, too many blitzes...fix it.

But when have facts ever gotten in the way of a good agenda.:lmao2:

You hit the nail on the head. The answer is not to switch back to the 4-3, but to find a true 3-4 coordinator. You go back to the 4-3 and you're back in the mix with teams trying to find talent for the 4-3. There are not many teams running a 3-4, so you have a better shot finding someone in the draft to fit your scheme.
