Something just hit me about the CB position.

just seems like we're adding up 3 players 1 year salaries and comparing it to a 5 year deal for reeves.

we don't even know what jenkins is going to cost but we can estimate.

wonder how much we'll be giggling on CBs salaries when we try to sign newman again.

If you want to do the 1 year thing here goes. 5 years $20 million, thats $4 million a year. We don't know how it breaks down but thats the average.

Jones is going to cost us $700,000 next year. Jenkins should get a deal in the neighborhood of 5 years $13 million. The 25th pick last year got 5 years $12.5 million. That comes to $2.6 million a year. Scandrick, a 5th rounder, can't get a deal worth much more than $250,000 to $300,000 a year. So if you add them all up, they should be somewhere around $3.6 million in the first year. If you add up the totals for all 3 contracts, you come up somewhere in the $27-28 million mark, and we all know Pacman isn't going to see that $7.25 million in the 4th year. But like I said, thats not much more than the deal Houston gave Reeves and we have 3 better players. Yes, Scandrick is better than Reeves!

i'm not arguing much about the value we have but you're comparing (2) unknowns we HOPE will play and a player on suspension we HOPE will play and their salaries to a vet.

again, the real comparison will be how much we have to pay newman.

Reeves sucks. All 3 of our new CBs are better than he is. What we have to pay Newman has nothing to do with Reeves. Newman is a probowl shutdown corner. Reeves is a freaking turnstyle at CB. If you are even hinting at thinking Reeves for $20 million is better than Newman for $50 million, they you're just plain nuts.

That's also why I would franchise Newman and take someone's 2 1st rd picks in a trade. Heck, I'll take a 1st and a 3rd for Newman, depending on where that 1st is.

Have any of you realized that Houston gave a below average CB in Reeves a $20 million deal and we now have Adam Jones, Mike Jenkins, and Scandrick added to our CB lineup at a cost that will not be much more than that $20 million given to Reeves. Now I ask you, is that just plain ridiculous or what?

Well Pacman is just a fortunate situation for us? We really shouldnt have had a shot at him, a 6th pick in 1st round.

Same with TO... we missed the boat in the draft(who knew?) and then again when he left San Fran and went to Philly.

In both cases there were unique circumstances.

But I hear ya :) aint that something how its workin in our favor

That would likely be a big mistake. Now if we can determine we have 3 very good CBs at the time that happens then ok, I would say maybe you gamble. But in all likelihood you would be losing a lot. It takes at least most of a season for a rookie CB to start shutting people down. Wanna take that gamble on a team with real SB aspirations that went 13-3 last year? I don't think so. If we suddenly suck and are cap strapped, then it might be a reasonable gamble.

It's always cheaper to build thru the draft.

Look at what we paid Bigg because we missed.

Yet another reason why we should have drafted a WR early, even if it cost us draft picks to move up.

look dude, you wanna sit and value-giggle, go ahead. but you're comparing the salaries of 2 players who've never played a down and one who never may against reeves and going WE WIN!

fine. we win.

but if reeves who does suck got $20mil, how much is newman, a "probowl shutdown corner" going to get?

suddenly whatever "value" we got from your comparison will be gone.

all i'm saying. you wanna limit it to slant your way, fine. yay. we win. we rule. ya'll suck.

better?

okay dude

So youre saying Jenkins and Scandrick have never played a down, yadda yadda. and hinting that they might stink

thats fair, youre right.

But Jenkins and Scandrick combined, by averages, are going to be cheaper this year than Reeves is.

So Id rather spend money on two guys who "might" pan out as posed to 20mil on a guy we know wont.

no, i'm saying you're comparing what you want to get what you want in the end, not necessarily apples to apples. but let's be real, this is NOT that big a deal. kinda ironic sure. i'd not swap positions either and think we're ahead of the game.

i just think it's a self-serving comparison but hey, no big deal. compare away.

I agree that we need to make sure we have 3 capable CBs before considering a franchise and trade sort of situation for TNew.

If there is no cap, no worries. Just re-sign him for the market rate - probably 5 years $50M given his age.

C'mon eduncan... You know you want to... :D

Take a deep breath and reply. It'll be therapeutic for you. At some point in time you have to stop mourning the loss of Reeves and move on with your life. ;)

Reeves stunk to high heaven. Let's not sugarcoat it. He makes Mario Edwards look like Champ Bailey.

Bah-Eagles went one step further...despite having TWO premiere CBs on their roster UNhappy over their current contracts, they went ahead and signed an overrated ZONE corner to a boat load of $$$$. To add fuel to the fire, Andy Reid ended up crowning Samuels as his starting LCB at his press conference back in late Feb. Fast-forward 2 months later-a disgruntled Lito is STILL on their roster.

Really-I am VERY estatic over how we upgraded our secondary this offseason. And we did it at a bargain basement to boot!

That and Zoners here were griping why Wade didn't play alot of press coverage last year. DUH! With Newman/Henry banged up all year, Reeves ended up taking most of the snaps. He was even getting burned by 3RD STRING RECEIVERS, for crying out loud.

Pt being that coaches can only play with the cards that are dealt to them.
