Everyone is worried about Maher, especially in what could come down to a close playoff game.

But one thing lost in the statistics: Maher is 19 for 21 at home. Yep, he has only missed 2 field goals at home this season, one against the Titans (38) and one against the Eagles (45).

The flip side is that he has a 75% FG percentage in games played outside.

Bottom line: the kid rarely misses at home. There’s no story here. No need to be on the edge of your seat. If we play the Rams next week, that’ll be another story!

The kicker. I mean we’re talking about the kicker...not a game, not a game. The kicker.

Let’s not discuss it any further. Please.

I like the details. I am more concerned about field position.

Kickers are important when you’re not scoring touchdowns. And missed kicks cost you games.

But for those here who are math challenged, 19 of 21 is a 90.4% field goal percentage. That would place Maher first in the league (Tucker is currently first at 90.1%).

Maher is automatic at home.

The reason is the jinx factor!!! Please no percentages or stats of any kind!!

Correct me I'm wrong, but aren't CFL goalpost wider than the NFL goalpost? That is what originally scared me about Maher. Next time let's get a kicker from the arena league....lol

Interesting point.

Did Maher get training and testing on grass during training camp?

There are Maher debates??? I thought all debates were about He Whom Shall Not Be Named.

Just kidding. Good thread. What worries me most about Maher is not his home or away success percentage but the unpredicability of his kicks' trajectories.

At first I thought he had an issue with hooking or slicing his kicks. Those would indicate a skills issue. Now I think it simply not firming having his aiming down pat. Perhaps his focus gets slighty off connecting with the ball.

Maybe he is not completely confident with his holder yet? Who knows but I wish he did not flirt with the uprights as much as he has done so far.

He still makes me nervous. We've been spoiled for a long time, so maybe I'm unrealistic.
No, I'm right there with you on the nervousness. The guy will crank out a 62 yarder, and then turn around and shank a 38 yard attempt. If we're not getting touchdowns in the "red zone" he's going to have to be on the screws this post season if we are to make any noise.

Still scares me on every kick. Offseason......need a guy who can put kickoffs in the end zone consistently.

That's so true...but if this team win tonight and have to hit the road to reach their ultimate goal, he's going to have to be that consistent throughout these playoffs.

I realize there have been many great story endings because of kickers. I for one do not ever want to count on a kicker no matter what. Great teams don't need great kickers. Those great Steeler teams, 49ers, even the 90s Cowboys, who were their kickers? Those teams won despite their kickers.

So what you’re saying is that his attempts needs to be closer to 60 yards at home.

:D

Well in fairness the 1993 Cowboys needed a FG kick to lock up the first seed when they faced the Giants in the last game of the year. This is the famous Emmitt playing with a separated shoulder game.

Ok. But the game was tied at the time. I'm talking game tying field goals or FGs down by a point or 2.
