Something Special About this Defense

Man, I'm looking at the tape (thanks, hairic) over and over again. And one thing I keep noticing is how cohesive the secondary is. They allowed like 85 yards in the first half--the whole defense. Eli's team was playing their usual game, but we're shutting them down.

Has this team "gelled" yet? I mean, I don't think so. But sometimes when Mo was getting what looked like he was beaten, was actually designed to use the safety over the top. Eli had problems with our CBs jamming them and their coverage was tight and they really can stay in-step with most their WRs...

Mo and Carr had Cruz control. Bennett was basically a non-factor, TD aside. But really. We seem like a team that is really getting some chemistry out there. This Bruce Carter guy has me thinking he's a baller. Lee, nuff said. I mean, we're flying around out there like a pro bowl defense.

The younger guys are doing a great job, and Hatcher, Spencer.

Just watching this gives me much hope that our team can get it done.

I almost feel like we're superior, like back in the 90s.

Blame it on the caffeine, but I really feel this defense can be ranked well.

After week 1, where do we rank anyway? That'd be nice to discuss.

You need to synergize that anti-Garrett sentiment with the pro defense outlook. The obvious solution is to have Ryan replace Garrett.

Run with it, mang. Hope things are well.

It's to early to say we will be great.

But we are better, and teams won't take us for a piggy back ride, like they once could.

If we stay decently healthy.....there will not be to many offenses racking up major points on us.

You can tell we play more like a unit

Yes I noticed that too. Especially when Eli goes through his reads and notices no one is open. He either throws it away, tries to force it in or scrambles, which he isn't good at.

Notice that the Giants used a crossing route on one of their biggest play out there. Sure they converted. But the significance to that is they were adjusting to what our defense was doing. Our press coverage was getting to them and disrupting their timing. Thus they needed a way for their receivers to get off the line easily.

This years defense is so much different in that regards. Teams are going to have a hard time passing against us.

Not that I think Garrett is bad, but if I had the power, I'd make Ryan the HC, because I don't want him to leave.

The defense is good. But remember it is only week 1. As the season wears on, teams will be throwing new things at the defense until something sticks. Then all the other teams we face will run with it. That's when Ryan and defense will really be tested.

Every defense goes through this. Talent and scheme prevail. Ryan can scheme.. its just for years(before Ryan) we overvalued our cornerbacks and safeties.

Like I said I want to see consistency. They came out the gate looking very strong last year (save a few drives against the Jets) and then they tapered off. This seattle team shouldn't put up more than 17 points

My assessment hasn't changed yet. This looks like the makings of a top-10 defense to me.

Our team's got some thin spots, but we've got good starters in most places, and good depth at some positions. We've got great balance. I think our respective teams will leave their counterparts in good game situations by and large this year, meaning our balanced offense isn't going to be putting the defense behind the 8-ball too often, and vice-versa. If our ST coverage units are any good, we should be playing good-percentage football most of the time with good talent on the field.

Hopefully, that means we won't be relying on Romo-miracles or end-of-game defensive stands too often. I think both units benefit from the consistency and end up in the top-ten league wide. How high up in the rankings they get will be a function of how much they come together on both sides of the ball.

I'm feeling it.

Coverage matters. This is what happens when you have multiple CBs who range from better than average to excellent. You force the opposing QB to be his best to exploit smaller windows.

Our defense had its first stiff test against the Giants and proved themselves vastly improved when compared to last year's version of the C'boys "D." I'm greatly encouraged by that performance, not that it came as a surprise. It really won't be surprising to see them continue to turn in those kinds of outings in the future, either, as long as reasonably good health permits. Greatness comes with top echelon performance over time, so we'll see if that label fits or not in the weeks, months and years to come. So far, so good.

Take a look at the tape, we have it on the zone, and just watch Sean Lee. But everyone played well, especially our corners. That's encouraging since it was game 1.

It's a shock to the system to see us actually PLAYING defense. It's been a long wait.

Luckily we play 6 games with either a rookie QB or 2nd year QB. A good Ryan defense is hard to figure out.

Seattle - rookie
Carolina - 2nd year
Cleve - rookie
Wash x 2 - rookie
Cin - 2nd year ( a similiar defense destroyed him on Monday night)

That's a good point, but RG III gives me a bit of concern. But I think we have the ideal defense to limit him.

I agree. My feeling is the defense will be consistent, which should be enough for us to get 11 wins. That's my prediction.
