This entire year, the Cowboys scout department has been evaluating potential candidates for the 34. With the switch to the 43, do they throw everything they've done out the window and start from scratch?

Point taken. I think they keep the due diligence on the guys who would be interchangeable and the offensive line prospects, then start working on players to fit the new scheme. Tell you what, a strong safety is an absolute must now.

Or maybe they've known a change was coming and have been studying candidates for a 4-3?

If we're lucky we'll take them out of the equation and use some standard service.:D

I know, cheap shot.

Our 2010 and 2011 drafts really weren't all that bad.

I doubt it...but considering Jerry pointing to the Bears and Seahawks games as reason to fire Ryan, it's not entirely out of the question.

Not an uncommon event in the NFL. Whenever new coaches are hired to a team they tell the scouts to look for different things. Wont affect us negatively at all.

I've never understood the whole 3-4 vs 4-3 philosophy anyway. What is the advantage and disadvantage of each formation? Is the 3-4 better against the pass, and the 4-3 better against the run?

Or maybe they were scouting guys who were scheme diverse.

It's only the beginning of January. I don't think it's a big deal. There's tons of film out there plus all-star games, the combine and private workouts.

The way I understand it, the advantage of the 3-4 is the offense doesn't necessarily know where the fourth rusher is coming from. This is also the reason why it has actually been a flawed proposition for the Cowboys, since Ware has been the only consistent source of pressure over the years. I like the move to the 4-3; but I think Jerry and company will be lying if they suggest expectations of playoff appearances in 2014.

After reading the responses and thinking about it for a moment, it may even prove to be an advantage in the end. There is plenty of time to pour over tape, as you said, and given the double work, it could prove to remove bias from the process.

Is it a good year to need a Safety? Do you know who is out there that would fit that mold? Do they already have him with Matt Johnson?
