When game-planning to play a team, the Defense reviews footage of the opposing team's offense and tries to prepare ways to counteract the tendencies of the scheme and the quarterback. When you have a bye week, you have extra time to prepare to play for the other team.
Coming out of the bye week, the Cowboys defense played well, but not as well as it could have. The reason for this, I think, is that Fisher did not tell us that Young was starting until the last minute.
The Cowboys did not have footage of Young. They had no tape to review on Young since this was his first NFL start. I suspect the Defense game-planned the last couple weeks to face Collins. When the last-minute switch to Young happened, I think our Defense had to play more cautiously. They did not know what to expect from Young. They did not know what kind of routes, formations, and the like that Tennessee would be throwing out there.
I think that effected our ability to be aggressive. We had to respond to Young instead of attacking him because we didn't know what they were going to be doing with him or what Young was going to try to do with the ball.
The unknown effect is amplified in this instance due to the kind of player Young is. If you are game-planning for Warner in Arizona and Leinart gets put in at the last minute, your game plan probably isn't going to change much. But if you are planning for Kerry Collins and they throw in Vince Young--perhaps the biggest question mark talent to enter the league in recent memory--then you are kind of thrown off a little bit.
The Cowboys played well. Vince Young made some decent looking throws, but made some raw mistakes. Vince did not take off and run as much as one would have anticipated he would have.
Other teams playing the Titans from here on out will now have some tape of Young with which to game plan. Other teams will also prepare all week with the knowledge that Young will be the starter.
When evaluating our defense's performance, I think that when consider this fact, they played well. They were guinea pigs having to figure out a great unknown on the fly.
