This isn't an original idea, but one I have been thinking about over the last day or so. I saw a post by LaTunaNostra that suggests Bill will ride into the sunset with Bledsoe.

This is a win or bust, and Drew is the QB that will get him there.

Now while I respect her opinion, I am thinking now that I might not agree with this assessment.

We are now moving into the what if game...this is opinion and conjecture. There are no facts here.

San Diego will have a day of reckoning coming at the end of this season. They have Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers as one and two on their depth chart.

If I am not mistaken, Brees will be coming up for a contract soon. If he performs as he did last year - and that performance doesn't need to be as good but close - then he will require a hefty contract to retain.

Rivers is a hefty contract sitting the bench.

I can't imagine that team keeping both players.

As I said, this is not new news.

So, the idea comes to me, would San Diego keep Brees and his larger contract? Or would they put their hopes on the less experienced guy and his smaller (marginally perhaps) contract?

I am just not sure we are seeing the last quarterback Parcells will coach, is my point.

I think Rivers has the pedigree, or so say some on these boards.

So do they stay with the kid they had so much respect for they used a draft pick when they had Brees? And I am aware Brees stunk it up when they were selecting Rivers.

Or do they trade Rivers and his contract because Brees has shown he is the man?

Of course we will have to see how this plays out. But surely they can't afford both.

There may be tread on the old Parcells tire after-all if one of these boys were to be offered in trade.

And now the usual question.

What would you give up for either?

Brees - our 1st round choice this next season, with maybe a late round kicker?

Rivers - Our first round choice this next season?

You make the call.

No more trading 1st rounders, for anybody.
I think the main thing that will keep BP around is if the rookie defenders play up to, and beyond, expectations. I'd say there's a good chance Parcells will want to stick around and enjoy a dominating defense if it looks like he will have one.

Brees signed a 1 year contract this year so he will be up next year.

I want them to bet the farm on Leinhart next year. Trade two first round picks for the right to choose him.

NO trading fo first round picks for starters.

If Brees plays this year like he did last year San Deigo has no choice but to sign him to a long term deal and trade Rivers. It is as simple as keeping the proven player over the potential of unproven player.

Agreed. If we are gonna put all our eggs in one basket, put 'em in that guys. He strikes me as the best prospect since Vick.

Trading first round picks for QBs that haven't proven anything in the NFL is the dumbest thing you could ever do. Ever. Ever.

Well qwick, you have a suggestion as to what we should do? Because, it seems the "no 1st round qbs" isn't exactly working out for us.

My opinion is that Parcells isn't going anywhere ... and Rivers isn't ready enough for Bill to be patient with.

See Banned, I was thinking San Diego went with Rivers and traded Brees.

Maybe I am doing some wishful analyzing here. But it seems that if market value has a hand in this. And they are close enough in ability to get the job done.

Wouldn't you trade away the guy that has shown the league and get fair market value rather than the guy that is all speculation? In the eyes of the league, not San Diego.

Of course this assumes much. And that the Chargers would see that they are equal or Rivers is better.

This is just a discussion and truly has not point anyway.
