Something To keep An Eye On:WestBrook Holdout?

I heard on WIP610, that they feel that Brian Westbrook, who fired his agent, that depends on his new agent that he may indeed holdout for a new deal.

From what as been said, Westbrook wants top five money. I guess the Eagles want to be cheap and balk about giving it to him.

Again, it's their speculation but something to watch. Westbrook fired his agent for a reason.

This is the agent's fault. He should have never accepted that extension when he was in the final year of his rookie deal. It was obvious he was pricing himself way below market value.

Anything that causes dissension in the Eagles is okay by me.

I agree! :lmao2: IMO, Westbrook deserves being paid top five money in the NFL.Westbrook is the MVP of the Eagles not McPuke.

Very similar to TO... took a deal that was too low.... and ironically enough he got the same agent:rolleyes: to remedy that situation :D

And keep in mind too that Lito also fired his agent, and hired DREW ROSENHAUS this week. Yes-DREW ROSENMANSION.

Nonetheless-I'm finding it laughable how not only the Philly sports press, but also the national media AND their fans are trying to put a positive spin on it.

Hugh douglas and Ike Reese are on now. They are saying current eagle players are tired of the orgainzation taking care of outsiders. Lito Sheppard has done more for the eagles, but they gave Asante Samuel 57 million. They also said Westbrook and Sheppard should've never signed those deals realizing the salaries increase every year and the eagles never renegotiate deals.

Westbrook will be an issue. They can't spin it any other way.

Hugh, Ike, and Gary Cobb are probably the only objective reporters in Philly-otherwise, 95% of that sports media up there are homeristic cheerleaders(i.e. all those reports last year how McNabb made a *quick* recovery, how Tony Hunt would become the next Walter Payton, how Jeremy Bloom was primed to be their star KR, etc, etc).

One day after Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard fired his agent and hired Drew Rosenhaus, The Inquirer has learned that Westbrook, the team's superstar running back, has fired agent Fletcher Smith, who also represents quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Smith and the Eagles had been in negotiations for the last nine months in an attempt to upgrade the running back's current contract, which has three years remaining. It is believed Westbrook fired Smith Monday, which means he cannot officially hire a new agent until Saturday.

A source close to the situation indicated that Westbrook may end up hiring All Pro Sports & Entertainment Inc., the group that includes agents Peter Schaffer and Lamont Smith. That is the same group that represented Sheppard before he hired Rosenhaus earlier this week. Agent John Rickert is also part of the All Pro group and represents Eagles running back Correll Buckhalter, another former client of Fletcher Smith.

Westbrook, in a recent interview with The Inquirer, made some strong comments about how dissatisfied he was with his current deal.

"When I signed my contract with the Eagles 2½ years ago, they paid me for the level of play I was playing at the time," Westbrook said. "I'm not at that level no more. I'm at a higher level of play. There's no question about that. The numbers don't lie. My numbers have steadily increased from that point until now. Now, I'm at the point where I'm one of the elite backs in the NFL, and I should be compensated that way."

It's difficult to argue that point. In the two full seasons since Westbrook signed his extension, he has compiled 4,020 yards from scrimmage, including a team record 2,104 last season when he led the NFL. Only San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson has more yards from scrimmage (4,272) in the last two seasons. Westbrook wants to be paid like Tomlinson, who received an eight-year extension worth $60 million, including $21 million guaranteed, before the 2004 season.

A team source said the Eagles agree that Westbrook should be better compensated for his services over the final three years of his current deal and that they initiated the contract talks with the running back late last season.

Fletcher Smith, during an interview yesterday, confirmed that he was in negotiations with the Eagles, but he did not reveal that he had been fired by Westbrook.

Asked last week if he would consider holding out from this year's training camp, Westbrook said, "to be honest with you, I don't know. I don't foresee me holding out of this training camp, but . . ."

Fletcher Smith said he didn't think it would be a wise move for Westbrook to hold out of camp, but he, of course, is no longer the running back's agent.

I knew all those long-term super-cheap deals they signed a couple years ago would cause trouble. It was a great deal for the team, but it was too great.

IIRC, Shawn Andrews signed one of those, too. Look for him to be next.

Double edged sword they played with. It's cool if you can win something (far-fetched in Philly) while those contracts are early and that signing bonus is still fresh, but then it bites. The players shouldn't have signed those dumb contracts, and the owner shouldn't have offered them, knowing he was getting over on the players.

It could get very messy in Philly for the next few years. You've got Sheppard and Westbrook already dissatisfied, Cole and Andrews will need new contracts, and they made the problem worse by bringing in Samuel and paying him big money even though he's not a much better corner than Sheppard.

Basically, it will be fun to watch their cheap selves try to climb out of this one.

They also gave Chris Clemons, who'll be just a situational guy, alot of $$ as well. He's a very good pickup for them. However-$20m for ONLY a situational guy raises alot of eyebrows as well.

Thanks for the post, Miamicowboy. Hugh has been all over the Eagles for some time about how cheap they are.

But I thought all their problems centered around TO and after he left they were supposed to be one big happy family.

I still can't figure why they soured on Sheppard the way they did. I never thought he was that great (though he did great against us), but it seemed like everyone else had him as All Pro and a top corner.

But then, I don't keep up with the goings-on in Philly.

TO that team obliterator he is. :laugh2:

He blew up that team and 3 years later there ARE STILL aftershocks....

(insert Billy Crystal and Deniro with there "oh you, you, you, you're good" line here)

I think they all brokered the deals w/ the thought they were close to winning a big one

I think both sides knew the gamble they were getting into

apparently Lito has been pretty bad the past couple of years, getting burned quite a few times

it's probably because he's a Cowboy-killer that you think otherwise lol

Philly should have learned better by now - guy's making way below market value tend to be malcontents unless they willingly took so to begin with to be on the team that they wanted to be (see NE and Dallas).

IMO, when someone clearly outplays their contract, you have to reward them with an extension if you want to keep them happy.
