This was something I was thinking about a couple of days ago and decided to post it. Before you read this, I ask that you keep a few things in mind before posting.

First, I have no agenda in posting this. Do not assume that I am pro-anyone on the Cowboys because I am not. I am just as frustrated as most fans at our ineptitude the last 17+ years.

Second, there is no "right" answer. You will not prove anything by shifting your answers to favor an agenda because your answers are only relevant and important to you. I am posting this only because it makes you stop and think about things in a different light even if only for a moment.

Third, if you don't care for the thread, don't post in it. Posting that you don't care or that this thought experiment is meaningless proves that it wasn't since you spent the time posting to say it.

Fourth, do NOT consider who we played, where the game was played, how the game played out, etc. Simply look at the points and random games and draw your conclusions.

What I want everyone to do is to look at our points just on offense and then just on defense and ask yourself that if you knew the point totals for only one side, but not the outcomes of the game, what do you think our record would be for each of those sides?

** I randomized the points to make it easier to clear the specific games from your mind!

1) What do you think our record would be based on points scored?
  • 31
  • 16
  • 30
  • 21
  • 17
  • 36
  • 17
  • 31
  • 36
  • 27

2) What do you think our record would be based on points allowed?

  • 16
  • 3
  • 31
  • 23
  • 49

Now, before you answer, make sure you read the points I made above.

My answers are:

1) 9-5
2) 6-8

I posted a thread a few months back saying the league average for points per game (at the time) was 24.5 points. I was saying that any game we scored 25 or more should be a win, and any game we allowed 24 or less should be a win. At the time we were about half and half, so I was trying to say that half of the credit/blame should go to the defense (everyone was giving the offense all the credit and the defense all the blame). Anyway, so based on that logic, to answer your questions...

1) 9-5
2) 7-7

Offense 12-2
Defense 4-10

I can't see but maybe 1 more lost on offense but we have scored enough points to win (not thinking about our defense) to win at least 12 games. However you want to slice it.

I was using the same logic, thus came up with the same records

1) 9-5
2) 7-7

I like this look at the scores only. Debate all but make sure and look at uh....reality. They are what we thought they were! You know that the Cowboys need to gameplan for 30+ to win these last few games. Dallas had 7 games over 30 and that should be 7 wins. hmm. Such a shame our defense was hamstrung again with injuries. "Hamstrung again...lol"

do we play the scores, or the teams? im confused? we dont plan for how many poitns we THINK we are going to get, we plan to counter said team we are playing. Heck, if you did this for all the teams, things would be really wierd.
