Sons of Anarchy Spinoff Casts Edward James Olmos
By Alex Welch

Beginning in 2008, Sons of Anarchy ran as one of the flagship series on FX for six years and through seven seasons. The series was a consistent ratings success for the network, launching Charlie Hunnam’s career at the time and consistently bringing in awards attention for a number of its supporting cast members, including Katey Segal, Ron Perlman, and more. Viewers thought they had seen the last of Kurt Sutter’s intrinsically violent, gangster world back in 2014, though, as Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller embarked on one last ride in the series finale.
As it turns out, that may not be the truth after all, with Kurt Sutter returning with a new Sons of Anarchy spin-off, currently titled Mayans MC. Set after the events of Jax’s death in 2014, the spin-off will focus on the inner workings of the Mayan MC charter that made several brief appearances throughout Sons of Anarchy‘s seven seasons and were one of the more well-known groups operating within the same network as the Sons.
Deadline is reporting that Battlestar Galactica‘s Edward James Olmos has joined the cast of Mayans MC today as well. In the series – which is set to focus on the life of a prospect in the charter named EZ Reyes – Olmos will reportedly play Reyes’ father, Felipe. Described as a once strong Mexican patriarch who struggles to keep his past buried and guide his sons to a more lawful life, after being beaten down by “bullets and hard labor,” he seems like the perfect character for Olmos to play. Kurt Sutter is expected to write and direct the pilot episode of Mayan MC, while also executive producing it alongside co-creator, Elgin James.
