Sorting out Cowboys' OL depth could create an interesting dilemma

How confident are you in the Cowboys’ offensive line depth?


From the hiring of Klayton Adams and Conor Riley, to the selection of Tyler Booker in the first-round, to other offseason free agent signings, the Dallas Cowboys are clearly putting a priority on upgrading their offensive line from top to bottom under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. It's a good sign they've learned from past mistakes.

With training camp and preseason on the horizon, the Cowboys now have the tough task of determining the overall depth chart on the offensive line, from starters to backups. Dallas typically carries around 10 offensive lineman on their 53-and roster, five obvious starters and five backups. Sorting things out could be an interesting dilemma.

I feel very good about the interior depth. Not the backup tackles. I hope, and I'm sure they hope the Richards, Nate Jones etc step up and impress in the preseason but an experienced, quality vet would make me feel better.

Exactly lol.

Guyton - Smith - Beebe - Booker - Steele

Steele starts because of contract. Guyton is stuck at LT because Steele stays at RT. Smith is an all pro LG. Beebe was a top 15 center and Booker is a plug and play guard

I mean, this is exactly what they will roll with on pretty much every play. Steele should benefit from the new coaching hires, as well as having Booker next door. He’s already good in the run game.

I would just like to see Hoffman or Bass preferred to Steele on some of the passing plays, so either:

Smith - Booker - Beebe - Hoffman - Guyton

or:

Smith - Bass - Beebe - Booker - Guyton
 
I didn't think interior OL depth was a problem before the draft, at least not the most pressing problem for Dallas. The OL is going to depend on Guyton and Steele to play better and that is true with Booker as well. On top of the players they had, they acquired Jones and Adeniji, and have Nate Thomas coming back from injury last year. I think they could have cobbled together a decent OL with what they had instead of using a 1st round pick on an OG.

Booker makes them better, of course, or so we expect, but I'd feel more comfortable with a stud DT.
 
Appreciate the depth Dallas has along the OL and its mega focus in coaching choices.
BUT, the OL grade will come down to how well the Tackles play and the LT plays specifically.
Which means Guyton has to either be remarkably better or they have to have a quick hook there.

The 9th and 10 OL are great off-season stories, but those guys don't play more than garbage time snaps in seasons that matter.
 
If an injury happens at LT, Tyler Smith will have to be the guy. They've got other guys who can play RT if Steele goes down. Not much realized talent at LT yet. It's all speculative, traits talent.

I guess we'll see. Tyler Smith is going to be key this year.

Man, am I glad we drafted him. We need him healthy.

True. I think at this point TJ Bass is better than Terrance Steele. Both UDFAs, but right now Bass is a better player.

I could even see him at either guard position or RT as well.

FRISCO, Texas — Tyler Booker has already made it known he’s a “natural born leader”, but the rookie first-round pick also understands that before he can lead, he must learn to follow. That is why he's leaned so heavily into learning everything he can from those on the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line who arrived in the NFL before him, such as Tyler Smith and Terence Steele.

Smith and Steele are tasked by head coach Brian Schottenheimer to lead the charge in helping to coach up the younger talent, e.g., Booker, Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe, particularly in a situation wherein there have also been changes at offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Having now worked through rookie minicamp, OTAs and mandatory minicamp, Booker has been a sponge for information, insight and coaching.

But as is often the case with those who seek to be great, Booker doesn't want to always rely so much on those around him, which isn't to say he never wants to, but instead that there comes a time and place when he should have a clear understanding of how to dominate on the field with only minor tweaks being needed here and there; and less and less coaching of the basics at the NFL level.

"I'm trying to make sure that doesn't become a habit, you know what I mean?" he said. "I'm very prideful about knowing the offense, and I want to make sure that I'm not holding this run back, by any means. So I'm definitely [working] a lot to make sure I'm not gonna hold the offense back."

Patrik: Stop me if you've heard this before but, for me, it's the offensive line and the running back position. Zack Martin's degenerative ankle issue made him a shell of his former Hall of Fame self in 2024, and it helped fuel the struggles of Terence Steele. Tyler Guyton, the 2024 first-round pick, battled injury, penalties and more, and has since revamped his offseason approach — also working with future Hall of Fame left tackle Tyron Smith — understanding what the team needs from him in Year 2. Cooper Beebe was impressive as a rookie and Tyler Smith became an All-Pro, but those were the only two beacons of light in that now rebuilt unit. Tyler Booker joins the crew as a rookie first-round pick himself, and the young group needs to find a way to dominate in both pass protection and run blocking going forward.

The starting tackles for 2025 are also fairly certain. Tyler Guyton is going to get every chance to put a rough rookie year behind him and deliver on the promise as last year’s first-rounder. Terence Steele will also return as the starting right tackle, with many hoping offensive changes under Brian Schottenheimer and Klayton Adams will lean more into his strengths. Even if either Guyton or Steele is challenged for their starting role this summer, it’s hard to imagine one of them falling off the roster entirely.

Guyton is having a much better off season because it's his first. Steele is a higher rated player than Bass. Lineup is not the best five on your post

I feel pretty good about it. Both Bass and Hoffman fared pretty well when called on to start. And Richards looked better than Guyton at left tackle. Plus, we can always pop Tyler Smith out to LT if absolutely needed. The only area of questionable depth to me is RT, and if forced to we could move Guyton there. I think the hope was that Rob Jones could be the veteran depth there, but we may have to hope that Nate Thomas, Waletzko or the rookie Cornelius will come through. Probably why we got Adeniji as well.
 
In my opinion this is what the Cowboys should roll with

Smith - Bass - Beebe - Booker - Guyton

I don't understand why the Cowboys don't move Smith back to left tackle for which he was drafted for to replace Tyron...He's the best tackle on this team..Let Steele and Guyton battle for right tackle spot where Guyton is better situated to play and the loser of that battle is the swing tackle..

This team has plenty of guards/tackle converts to battle it out to start at left guard..

I think the reason is he was just OK at tackle. Where as he is an All Pro left guard.

I’m not scout on this. But they don’t really eat bad contacts meaning Steele is stuck here. Steele doesn’t play LT so Guyton is stuck at LT
