Once upon a time I thought I knew computers but it seems I'm out of the loop. My girlfriend bought me this laptop about 3 years ago but it just processes everything at a snails pace.

Can we soup it up?

Specs:
Dell Inspiron 5537
Windows 10
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4200U CPU @ 1.60GHz 2.30GHz
Ram 8GB
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

I use my iPhone more these days, so frustrating just to check email on the laptop...

your system could be over heating or hard drive going slow reload your system or change hard drive to SSD
I for one won't touch anything with windows 8 or 10 in it ( Proprietary bloatware). Try windows 7 it will run faster. or even better install Linux ( Mint) or my favorite BSD.

A SSD (Solid State Drive) is the best bang for the buck performance improvement you can do for any computer that doesn't already have one. Your laptop already has a decent processor and memory. Depending on what wireless card your laptop has, there can be some advantage to upgrading to wireless AC if you have an access point that is AC capable. Other than that, upgrading a laptop can be tricky. You are limited by the motherboard for which you cannot purchase upgrades due to all laptops having different manufacturer specific form factors.

This is a question for @Sam I Am
Lol

Put sone wham in it... errr... I mean RAM in it.

1. Take out the two 4g and put 2 8g in it.... if it allows
2. Do a complete factory reinstall
3. Remove bloaty

Well, that depends on what you're doing with the laptop. Here are probably the best upgrades you can do to get more bang out of it.
  • Install a decent SSD drive. This should speed things up quite a bit over a spindle drive, though you may lose some storage space depending on how much you spend on the drive.
  • Reinstall the operating system from scratch. (if you install a new SSD drive, the speed up should be significant.
  • Dell says the system supports up to 16GB of memory. This could help depending on what you actually do with the laptop. Adding memory will never hurt the performance. You most likely will need to replace all the memory, not just add 8GB. You will likely new to purchase (2) 8GB DIMMS, as most likely you have (2) 4GB DIMMS now and most laptops only have two DIMM slots.

If you're looking to play games on it. Don't bother. If you just want a laptop that doesn't crawl. Start with the SSD and OS reinstall. If you've got a litte more cash to throw at it. Get the memory also.

Thanks..

Mainly I just check email, face, twit, instaG, CZ, CF, banking, videos, music, and links to football stuff.

Did a bunch of updates over the weekend and temporarily turned off the virus mafia program, it speeded up quite a bit.

Uninstall any unused software you do not use too. Many times that stuff will run in the background eating resources. If you uninstall them, they aren't using your resources!

I concur.

Typically I do cntrl-alt-delete to see what's running, then I go to start up and disable stuff I don't use and restart.

For some reason it got stuck on an update for like 2 hours and I had to remove the battery and reboot..

If it gets slow again I'm ordering a Crane camshaft with roller rockers, might even get a nitrous kit..

Soup up? Are you gonna eat it with crackers? I'd marinate it for a few weeks, JMO, of course ;)

An SSD will definitely help, but if your laptop has those specs and it is running slow, you have other issues you need to address first.

You probably have bloatware installed on it from the initial purchase, plus there are several things you can disable to better optimize Windows 10. Do a google search for something like "speed up windows 10".

That's probably why I could never get my ole Chevy project to do wheelies, spelled suped up wrong all these years...:(

Actually... you are correct. My spelling is not the correct spelling according to google and the song by carried underwood... lol (I only found one reference/result)

Lyrics to song...

I dug my key into the side
Of his pretty little souped-up four-wheel drive
Carved my name into his leather seats
I took a Louisville slugger to both head lights…
