After the Ginn blunder, anything would be an upgrade.
I loved that look on all those Dolphin fans when the Ginn pick was announced. The entire crown went  at once. Priceless.

Parcells won't just be evaluating talent, he'll be in charge of completely rehaul the Dolphins front office and player personnel department. He had to do it with the Patriots, Jets and Cowboys to a lesser degree. What if Parcells offered Jeff Ireland the Dolphins' assistant GM job, with assurances that he would be his successor? Ireland knows he's never going to be the general manager for the Cowboys. He's awfully young to be content with a job with no upward mobility.
Depends on how long he thinks Jerry is going to stick around in full force. He's been slowly handing the reigns over to Stephen, and after the stadium is finished might be ready to sit back and be just the owner. I think Stephen and Jeff are a nice combo, because Stephen isn't a personnel guy and Jeff isn't a business guy.

PARCELLS TO DOLPHINS? by Michael David Smith

Citing sources close to the four-time former NFL coach, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Bill Parcells could be the Miami Dolphins' general manager in 2008.

"It makes a lot of sense that the Dolphins would be a job he'd be very interested in if it came open," a source close to Parcells told Cole. "But only as the GM. I don't think he'll ever coach again."

Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga has told the Miami Herald that he plans "internal self-studies" to figure out what's wrong with his 0-7 team and whether solving the team's problems would include replacing General Manager Randy Mueller and/or coach Cam Cameron.

Parcells, who has coached the Giants, Patriots, Jets and Cowboys, has a friendly relationship with Huizenga. The two played golf together at Huizenga's private course in the spring. Parcells might be interested in a job with the Dolphins because he spends a lot of time in the off-season in Florida, although he has twice turned down job offers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Would an offer from the Dolphins get Parcells to leave ESPN and get back into the NFL? Who knows? Parcells' career moves have been impossible to predict, and there will be rumors linking him to NFL jobs until the day he dies.

Yep. He's going to float these lines out there through his buddies and see if he gets any bites.

One strange thing about this situation is that I've heard Parcells prop Mueller on his show as recently as a few weeks ago. He said the Dolphins were going through hard times, but unlike with some bad teams, he saw a plan in Miami. (He didn't elaborate on what it was, though.) So I'm pretty sure Mueller is one of his friends.

I don't think Parcells would be that great a GM. What's he going to do, hire Al Groh? Actually, he might. Because whoever it is, he'll have some connection to Parcells.

I know one thing, I wouldn't want to coach under him. Talk about having someone in your ear all the time thinking he could always do it better than you. Almost makes you wonder if he could resist pulling a Pat Riley and taking over himself.

That would be my concern too, CL. The man is so arrogant and stubborn that I have trouble believing he would actually listen to the coach's input on type of players needed to fit his scheme, etc. OTOH, at this point in his life, he's better suited to GM than he is to coaching.

Just FYI, the DMN blog posted the blurb about this last night. I just decided to post the original article.
Parcells might help clean up Miami mess
Yahoo.com is reporting that Bill Parcells might end up in Miami's front office, trying to fix a team that will have a hard time winning a game this season.

"It makes a lot of sense that the Dolphins would be a job he'd be very interested in if it came open," a source close to Parcells said Friday. "But only as the GM. I don't think he'll ever coach again."

Prediction: If the Tuna takes this gig, he fires Cam Cameron and takes over as coach after a season.

I thought Parcells and his crew already established that you don't steal people from the "family"...

Or is that only when it doesn't benefit them? ;)

He certainly didn't steal from the family when he took the Cowboys job. Of course, that might have been from Jerry trying to force his personal favorites like Zimmer on him. I don't know if the same unspoken rule applies to front office people.

If Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga decides to make significant changes this offseason, don't be surprised if Bill Parcells surfaces as a top candidate to help in a resurrection of the 0-7 team.

While such change is purely speculative and premature at this time, a source close to Parcells said it's completely logical.

"It makes a lot of sense that the Dolphins would be a job he'd be very interested in if it came open," a source close to Parcells said Friday. "But only as the GM. I don't think he'll ever coach again."

Huizenga told The Miami Herald last week he is not only unhappy with the state of the team this season, but that he would have the team conduct "internal self-studies" before he made decisions on the future of both general manager Randy Mueller and first-year coach Cam Cameron.

Huizenga expressed his unhappiness again earlier this week at the NFL fall meetings in Philadelphia. However, Huizenga said he hadn't spoken with Parcells since playing golf with the former coach in the spring at Huizenga's private course, The Floridian, in Stuart, Fla.
"That idea (of hiring Parcells) is a shock to me," Huizenga said.

If the internal evaluations lead to massive change by Huizenga, Parcells, who is currently an analyst for ESPN, would be a logical candidate on a number of fronts.

Parcells has great respect for Huizenga and the owner's style of not interfering with the football operations. While that doesn't make Parcells unique in the football world, he also has developed a social relationship with Huizenga.

In addition, Parcells spends a lot of time in South Florida, particularly in the offseason because of his love of horse racing and baseball.

For Huizenga, the move would be logical because he has always preferred a "star" system for running the Dolphins, putting one person in charge of the entire football operations.

Since 1993, when Huizenga bought the team, that person has normally been the coach, as Huizenga had with Shula, Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wannstedt and Nick Saban.

This is only the second year in which Huizenga has had a GM/coach set-up. The other time he did that was in 2004 with Wannstedt and Rick Spielman. That season was a disaster, starting 1-8 before the firing of Wannstedt and ultimately finishing 4-12.

The catch is that Parcells likely doesn't want to coach again and would probably only want to be in an executive role.

Parcells, 65, was general manager of the New York Jets in 2000 after retiring as coach. Also, according to a book published this fall, he held a private meeting with Giants executives late last season while coaching the Dallas Cowboys. Parcells expressed interest in succeeding Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi, who retired after last season.

Parcells, who won two Super Bowls as coach of the New York Giants in the 1990s, has been adamant about running the football operations since becoming the Patriots head coach in 1993. Parcells has coached the Jets and Cowboys since then, retiring from Dallas after last season.

All of that said, Parcells has been wildly unpredictable throughout his career, ranging from changing his mind at the last minute in 1992 about coaching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to leaving the Patriots after leading them to the Super Bowl in the 1996 season.

While with the Patriots at the Super Bowl in New Orleans that year, Parcells was calling the Jets to work out a contract.
