Two members of the San Francisco 49ers staff and a third NFLsource said Saturday they expect 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh to accept a six-year, $48 million contract to become the head coach of the University of Michigan.

"That's what everybody on staff believes is going to happen this week," one of the sources said. "Jim has figured out that his style is best-suited for the college game. His shtick works better with young guys who are gone after three or four years."

Before we start ragging on BR, this is a Jason Cole story. Mark Davis either doesnt have or wont pay a coach 8 mill a year.

Man, there's some dysfunction going on in SF if these anonymous sources are to be believed.

I'd say Harbaugh's style works fine in the NFL. I think that's overblown. He's had success.

Maybe he's like a weight conscious Bill Parcells. More of a short term guy who needs a change of scenery after 4 or 5 years.

If I was him, I'd look to stay in the NFL. That's the highest level. You have to think he'll have an opportunity to head coach in the league. Don't turn it down for a college gig.

Of course that's easy for me to say. I'm not being offered a reported 48 million to coach my alma mater.

I think Harbaugh is a great coach in the NFL. Unfortunately, he hitched his wagon to Kaepernick who has not progressed since his first year as a starter.

That and we could see the York's motive...get Harbaugh to bring interest back to the Niners and then the success became great enough to get the Niners a new stadium and then force Harbaugh out before he looks to renew his contract.

Expected Jim to be the next coach to win a SB

Shame things were not quite aligned for him in the Bay

Not in my book. I like Harbaugh a lot (the guy can coach at any level). I don't want the Bay Area getting another Super Bowl win, though. Better to see them flailing in mediocrity.

Strange how fast that job imploded for him. I agree though, great coach. Better to see him at Michigan than the NY Giants or Washington. He's definitely better off taking the Michigan job than letting the team trade him someplace like Oakland where he's never heard from again.

As for why though, I think it's a more simple Jerry/Jimmy schism that got poisonous and bled over into player/coach relationships.

It's almost the opposite of the Jimmy/Jerry roles. Whereas Jimmy was caught snooping around the Jacksonville job heading into the playoffs and Jerry flipped, it seems the 49ers were caught shopping Harbaugh after taking the team to the Super Bowl and Harbaugh flipped. Trust/respect in management disappeared and he tuned out the GM. Jed York backed the GM instead of the coach, which further damaged the relationship to where a split is the only option.

Fine by me. Please take that job, Jim. Hopefully the 9ers will begin to rot again without him around.

Nice rundown.

Some people here know whom I favor when it comes to a good HC versus a General Manager. You can have instant success after a great coach leaves, but if you don't have the right coach, down the road it's going to work against you. And I have crocodile tears seeing the Niners possibly screwing this up.

I think some people don't realize just how bad that Niners organization was before Harbaugh. They did get tied to Kaepernick, but supposedly his contract is actually one they can get out of pretty quickly. But, to me I would rather have somebody like Harbaugh developing the next QB and trying to get Kaepernick turned around than most other coaches.

This reminds me a lot of the San Diego situation where AJ Smith hated Marty Schottenheimer and was looking for any excuse to get rid of him. The Chargers sided with Smith and paid dearly for it.

Michigan needs a real head coach so badly. I forgot they used to be a player in NCAA Football once.

I think both Harbaughs belong in the NFL. Too bad Jim has decided to rot in the worst college conference.

He seems really strange too, his press conferences are a trip

John seems much more personable and articulate
