Texas A&M assistant David Beaty is expected to become the new head coach at Kansas, sources told FOX Sports Friday morning.

The 44-year-old Beaty, a former assistant at KU under Mark Mangino when the Jayhawks had a lot of success who also spent one season at Rice as the Owls' offensive coordinator, is regarded as one of the nation's top recruiters and had landed a bunch of blue-chippers from his native Texas.

I'm obviously anxious to see how this hire is accepted. No one expect a big name to come here and one didn't. It's going to be an interesting weekend to watch the local reaction.

This hire will be panned but it was a far better hire than Weis.
This guy knows modern college offenses (tempo/speed/spread the field) and is a stud recruiter.
What he builds with staff elsewhere will be key.
He could really use the defensive staff they have in place.
Kansas has to recruit better and recruit Texas to win.

Sure they do. What would you make such a statement?
I live near there and have for over 50 years. Football is taken serious but it will always understandably be a hoops town.

I visit one other sports forum. A WVU football forum. There is a Big 12 section that was spawned from all of the expansion talks.

Surprisingly there are still a lot of big 12 fans from other teams that visit that section and it has grown to be a pretty good spot to talk with fans from other big 12 teams.

One thing that is clear from fans of other big 12 teams...Kansas does not take it's football program anywhere near as serious as the basketball program and also that the football facilities (not just stadium) are pretty bad and possibly at the bottom of the Big 12 teams if it were ranked...this also comes from some Kansas fans.

I personally don't know how good or bad the facilities are as I have never been to them but I do trust what other members of the big 12 have said on that forum which also included some Kansas fans.

Not belittling the Kansas football program. Just saying from what I gathered it seems like they are at the bottom end of the Big 12 when it comes to taking football as seriously as other sports like basketball.

HOWEVER, I have heard from a Kansas fan or two that there are some donors who will be adding some to the football program and they are hoping for an upgrade to the facilities.

Yes that is all true. The hiring of Charlie Weis was supposed to be the "big name" to help put the program over. Once things started going south, the momentium quickly shifted and priorities changed. The local spin on the Beaty hire isn't generating the buzz a new hire should and I suspect the long term changes needed won't be getting a big push anytime soon. Perhaps the Beaty hire just doesn't jump start my optimism. I do know the program is taken seriously and the embarrisment of the product on the field is a black eye they want to go away. Basketball is king in this entire state but the support would be there should the Jayhawk program get back on the map just like it did for K-St when Bill Snyder took over.
