The Detroit Lions have reached an agreement in principle with Jim Schwartz to become their next head coach, according to several sources.

Schwartz, the Tennessee Titans' defensive coordinator for the past eight seasons, has agreed in principle to a four-yeal contract.

On Tuesday, after a second interview with the Lions, Schwartz said the chance to coach the NFL's first 0-16 team motivated him to tackle it and succeed in it.

"I don't shy away from a challenge," Schwartz said earlier this week.

- Just for formality purposes. NO Garrett to Detroit, as we knew.

He's a good solid football guy, but I'm a little surprised the Lions didn't interview more offensive minded guys having just come off Rod Marinelli and probably taking a possible franchise QB to develop with one of their first round picks.

thats a very good point. Might have something to do with the fact that 3 of the 4 remaining teams have just about 0 offense..and stellar defenses at that.

The Detroit Lions have reached an agreement in principle with Jim Schwartz to become their next head coach, several sources told ESPN on Thursday.

The Lions fired Rod Marinelli after his team made history. Schwartz just finished his 10th season with the Titans.

Before being hired in Tennessee, Schwartz spent three years on the Baltimore Ravens' staff. He also was a college and pro scout for the Cleveland Browns and that experience might be valuable in Detroit.

The Lions have the No. 1 pick in April, along with first- and third-round picks from the Dallas Cowboys, and need to find players to spark a turnaround.

Among other things, the Lions will be counting on Schwartz to come up with ways to improve a defense that ranked last in the league and gave up 517 points -- threatening the NFL record for points allowed (533) in a season set by the 1981 Baltimore Colts.

Defensive minded coaches are in right now, just by judging the way these playoff teams are looking.

It's a copycat league.

If Garrett can't get a HC job, can he possibly get a OC job somewhere else?

It maybe some kind of a violation to the NFL rules, but I'm not sure.

is this good or bad ????

It depends on if you wanted to keep Garrett or not. One less job for him to get.

I'm on the fence. I'm not sold on him and haven't been totally impressed. But at the same time I think if TO is gone, he may become more balanced in his attack. On the other hand, if he leaves, then that may persuaded Jerry to dump Wade and bring in someone like Shanahan.

But then again, Jerry could just opt to promote Wade Wilson or Ray Sherman and that'd be much worse than just keeping Garrett as OC.

Did you see the Lions defense this year? Or for that matter, the last 3 years? Under Marinelli they couldn't tackle or stop anybody. Last year they were just able to force a inordinate amount of fumbles which is usually due to luck.

Not to try and offend, but a friend of mine works for the Detroit AP and constantly griped of how bad the tackling and defense was in Detroit last season, when they went 7-9. At least they have some talent on offense with Johnson and Kevin Smith. Defense they pretty much only have one good player and that's Ernie Sims, an outside backer.

DC in Tennessee for eight years. Hired by the Lions to be HC.

I would've waited another decade for Fischer to retire before I took that job.

Only two things can happen for him in Detroit: More of the same, which would destroy his HC chances for the future...........

Or, a miraculous turn-around with some playoff appearances, and he'd be the next Jimmy Johnson.

Somehow I doubt the latter..............................

The Detroit Lions have agreed in principle with Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to hire him as the team’s new head coach.
More to come …

Jim Haslett will not be retained by St. Louis

Interim head coach Jim Haslett has been informed that he will not be the Rams head coach in 2009.
There have also been reports that all members of the coaching staff have been let go. The Rams appear to be zeroing in on their man after narrowing their list to Leslie Frazier, Steve Spagnuolo, and Jason Garrett. Haslett remains a candidate for the Packers defensive coordinator position.

Heard it on my way to pick up pizza. Guess the last job for Jason Garrett would be St. Louis.
