And even if Tomlin does end up being the HC, it doesn't justify the original story by SI.

Why not?

That is a good Idea.

I am thinking of blaming one of the clintons, one of the bushes and Bud selig also.

They should all be on the lookout.

Due to how quickly the denials came out with actual quotes, I feel like Silver and SI could've done the same thing and ran a different story.

Just one of those things. SI came with a source. ESPN came with quotes.

Again, if it turns out to be true, all ESPN did is feature a statement from Tomlin that says the Steelers never spoke to him today.

Not once did Silver's article mention anything other than an announcement will come in the next two days.

Again, we will see. If true, Silver should get credit for the scoop.

It's just a matter of presentation. To give you an idea of what I mean.

Sources indicate that the Pittsburgh Steelers have chosen Mike Tomlin to be their next head coach. SI was able to reach Tomlin and he was quoted as saying "..." Our attempts to reach Steelers President Art Rooney II were unsuccessful.
We expect an official announcement within the 48 hours.
You get a whole lot less egg on your face when you make it look like you tried to verify the information before publishing. Relying on an unnamed source makes you come across as PFT.

But yeah you're right in that we should know something soon regardless.

Now Mortensen is reporting that he is the coach??

Sources: Steelers set to name Vikes' Tomlin as coach

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to name Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin as their new head coach, ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirmed Saturday night.
Sources told Mortensen that the team would announce Tomlin as coach either Sunday or Monday. Tomlin would become only the third Steelers coach in 38 years, and the first black head coach in their 74-year history.
Tomlin, a former Tampa Bay assistant, has been the coordinator for just one season under Brad Childress in Minnesota. Before that, he was a Buccaneers' secondary coach, a five-year spell that included installation of the teams' trademark "Tampa-2" scheme. He was an assistant coach in the collegiate ranks from 1995 to 2000.
Sports Illustrated's Web site, SI.com, first reported that Pittsburgh had decided on Tomlin earlier Saturday. Steelers owner Dan Rooney told The Associated Press he had no comment. Team president Art Rooney II, leaving the team's practice complex Saturday, said he had nothing to say.
A person with knowledge of the search denied Tomlin has been hired, telling the AP that not only has the job not been offered but there have been no contract negotiations. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Steelers do not want details of the search made public until they have made their choice.
Tomlin and Grimm, the Steelers' offensive line coach and only remaining in-house candidate, both had their second interviews earlier this week. The Steelers couldn't talk to Rivera again until the Bears are eliminated from the playoffs. Chicago plays New Orleans in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.
The Steelers' diligence in finding Cowher's successor cost them offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, a move that leaves Grimm as the possible front-runner.
Whisenhunt, one of the NFL's top offensive coaches, took the Arizona Cardinals' job Sunday rather than waiting to see if he would be promoted by Pittsburgh. He will be officially introduced by the Cardinals at a news conference Tuesday.
While Whisenhunt was widely considered around the NFL to be Cowher's heir apparent, the Steelers gave no such indication after Cowher resigned Jan. 5. Also, they apparently didn't make a counteroffer to persuade Whisenhunt to stay.
Grimm also interviewed with the Cardinals, but unlike Whisenhunt, didn't get a second interview.
Tomlin had an excellent interview with the Steelers and, like Cowher in 1992, is an on-the-rise candidate despite being only 34 and having minimal experience as an NFL coordinator. Tomlin took over the Vikings' defense this season.
Whisenhunt may take quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple with him as offensive coordinator, meaning the two coaches who have closely worked with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger the last three seasons would be gone.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

-------

Thank goodness Mortensen is around to "confirm" something he worked hard to debunk a few hours ago.

Remind me again how pathetic ESPN is.

Now the talk is that Tomlin is going to bring in the Tampa 2, and the Steeler defensive coaches are all going to Arizona. I don't see LeBeau follwing Whisenhunt to Arizona. One, Arizona is not a good franchise, and Bidwell probably doesn't pay a premium for big name assitants. Two, if I were a 70 year old coach who had been in the league 45 years, the last thing I would want is to finish out my career on a rebuilding project underneath some rookie head coach who doesn't which way to put his head sets on. Wisenhunt would be best served keeping Pendergrast and sticking to the 4-3, because their personnel doesn't match the 3-4 very well. All of their NFL quality defensive lineman are strictly 1 gappers.

Now, what would Pittsburgh want for Clark Haggans or Joey Porter?

I have also read the team is strongly urging Whisenhunt to keep Pendergast, who they like.

MORT SAYS TOMLIN TO BE HIRED
Hours after ESPN Chris Mortensen obtained quotes from Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin indicating that he had not been offered the Steelers head-coaching job, Mortensen now reports that the Steelers will hire Tomlin.
As of this posting, Mortensen's report appears via a headline link that calls the original report of Tomlin to Pittsburgh "untrue."

Someone, we think, owes Michael Silver of Sports Illustrated an apology for suggesting that his report that the Steelers had picked Tomlin was wrong. The reality is that Silver knew that Tomlin had been selected before Tomlin knew, yet no one bothered to recognize the possibility that Silver might still be right.

I have not read this, where did you read this.

Maybe I am nuts, wasnt pendergast released or fired already?

I am wrong. I thought i read last week that pendergast would not be back. Guess not.

I thought I read last week also that tomlin said he was ok with any defense, 34 or 43.

Maybe after a year or two he will change. If he does change you are right, find out what they want for haggans or porter. Porter would bring a nice attitude here.

I've read somewhere that the team was encouraging the Whiz to keep Pendergrast.

How can a team as steeped in tradition as the Steelers simply pull this guy out of nowhere to coach their team? Don't they understand he could be a complete flop? Why wouldn't they bring in someone who was at his best in the Mesozoic era? I am just floored by this. Why would a team who won the SuperBowl last year turn the keys over to someone so young and unaccomplished? And I thought those Rooneys knew football.
