Spagnola: Better Keep Scoring Points If You Want To Win In This League

I've heard that the team with the most points each game, wins the game, no matter how it's done. I couldn't care less if we won every game next season 3 to 0 or 35 to 31, as long as we're hosting the Lombardi at the end of the season. Spags needs to write because its his job, so I give him a pass on this one.

I'm convinced. Let's spend those first two picks on a RT and a WR2. No sense stopping the other guys from scoring 34 when you can just score 35. Easy.

TBH we're probably closer to that than building a championship level defense.

That made no sense even for a Spagnola article.

I have no point of reference on this one Alex. I guess I'd have to first see an article from Spags that actually made a modicum of sense, in order to know for sure.

Don't get me started. :(

Let's just improve where it's easiest to improve and see what happens. There's no shortage of positions to upgrade.

I think if we can get a DT or combination of guys to become a force it will elevate the play of our DE's. If we're not going to break the bank on an all-pro DE we need to do what we can to help the guys we do have succeed. After that we should should look at LB and S upgrades. I think our CBs are fine and would probably perform near the top of the league if they had a decent pass rush to work with.

I'm ok with the DT rotation, though I'm all for upgrading it if we can. There's not going to be much we can do for immediate impact at DE, but we need to invest resources there. We can improve the DL rotation overall with a VFA addition and a couple of high picks.

S ought to be a spot where we can upgrade. Though they supposedly like Frazier quite a bit, too. We're going to lose at least one CB. LB depth can alway improve. Hitting on Smith would be a huge boost there if it works out. I liked what we saw from Wilson at the end of the year, too.

I'd like our offense to score more AND our defensive to improve and hold opponents to less. Maybe be a top 2-3 sack team and top 5 overall defensively.

But you gotta score..if you're averaging 20-25 points per game....your done. Atlanta averaged 36 points in their last three games, and New England averaged 34.7 in their last three games. That's some high powered offenses

If we're hosting the trophy, it means we won the big one, doesn't it? They don't let you keep it unless you win the whole thing. However, my English teacher mother thanks you for your editorial contribution. :D

Look I can't even blame Mickey. Fans on this board are desperate to use one of our first two picks on a wr2 or a RT. Or spend a ton of money on LG so that we can move our current cheap LG ready to step in there to RT. And then if he succeeds they will be asserting that we absolutely cannot let him walk so that's another huge contract at RT.

I mean why can't we have every position on the line be the highest paid at their position? Who cares about defense!

at the rate they are fixing the defense the offense will be old and creaky by the time they are done building a defense that can win in the playoffs

He is so full of horse puggy he can't see straight.

"Funny, haven’t heard a peep all week about that real old, tired, nauseating cliché insisting offense sells tickets and defense wins championships."

His analogy is all wrong. The statement that "offense sells tickets and defense wins champships" is the correct truism.

You can't back it up bro.

You need a decent defense to be sure. But the evidence overwhelmingly shows that having an elite offense with an elite QB at the helm is the secret sauce.

That said....we need help on defense right now. Big time.

It's all about passing effectiveness differential, which very often requires an elite QB to make it work. But when there are teams in your division with elite QBs better than yours (sorry guys), you either have to give your QB more skilled options or you have to have personnel to make it harder for those better QBs to be so effective. In our case, that roughly translates to getting more pressure.

Though honestly, I do think a WR who could lift the top off a defense changes things dramatically for us on offense, too. If you can't double both Dez and a deep threat and still stop Beasley, the TEs, and Elliott. A guy doesn't need to be a top WR to do this. He just needs to be fast enough that you have to bracket him. There aren't a tone of those guys in a given draft, but there are a few of them every season. I'm for adding one outside the first wherever we can get in position to do so.

And, yes, I know that flies in the face of what I repeatedly say about adding talent to the defense. I think it would help the passing differential every bit as much as a second DL pick would (assuming we do go DE with our #1 pick).
