Definitely good news if it happens:

Spears could be back quicker than 4 weeks
The Cowboys have said starting defensive end Marcus Spears will be out 4-6 weeks with a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. They are hoping he is a fast healer.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday that Spears could be back quicker than four weeks. Jason Hatcher will replace Spears in the starting lineup.

"We’re being very conservative when we say four weeks,” Jones said in Canton, Ohio, where he will present Emmitt Smith today. “We’re hoping he will be back before then.”

Jones said Alex Barron will play Sunday in the Hall of Fame Game. Barron participated in the walk-through Friday, a day after dislocating a pinkie finger.

Hatcher getting the first call to step into a starting role in Marcus Spear's absence. Hatcher is reaching dependbility and challenge now, but I think the heart of Spear is starting to show now. We is getting hungry as it applies to achievement and not just holding down a starter's role. I hope he is able to return quickly and not ride a continual swelling and average play then. I like the sound of this post a lot.

That makes sense. This really is a 3 week injury. If we really had to have him in the lineup he probably could have played after 2 weeks wearing a knee brace.

We don't really "need" him until Sept. 12th.

I really expected a heavier rotation at DE this season. This injury might help kick start that.

I don't like the idea of rushing Spears or Dez back.

Who says they're rushing either one of them? If they're ready to play, then let them play. I don't see a rush here at all.

Jerry's not going to learn to shut up about injuries, is he? This is the second player he's said would be back before the injury estimates... So now if they don't, the questions are going to be "Why aren't they ready yet?"

And they probably won't go to Jerry, they'll go to someone else.

You'd think the Barber toe injury would've been a lesson to be very conservative with these things, but I guess not.

Wow, we usually agree on stuff CL but I think your being way too harsh here...I dont see any comparison at all to what Jones said about Barber when he was hurt two years ago to either Bryant, or Spears' injuries. And all he said was they were being conservative with the 4 week estimate and that he "hoped" he'd be back sooner.

This injury didnt get much of a reaction from me.

We got a handful of young DL we need to take a look at. Some competing agaisnt each other for roster spots some on audition for a new contract. Nows your time, somebody step up

Of course it's not the exact same situation, but it's still being overly optimistic regarding an injury.

Sure, everyone hopes he's back before the usual recovery time, but that's the case with every injury. There's just no need to come out and say it.

Now if it takes him five weeks, Spears will surely get some questions about what's taking so long.

It's not the end of the world... I just wish Jerry would tone it down.

Jerry has been involved and asked about what was going on with the Cowboys ever since Jerry left. A reasonable person might have buried a long ago rusted hatchet concerning his role in communications involving activities at Valley Ranch. He made Valley Ranch himself. It wasn't but a Training Camp removed from this that there was a total ban on all communications coming from anyone BUT himself. We are now peaved that Jerry would comment as to status.

One could have as easily believed that he had full knowledge of medical status since he has a complete staff to handle any and all involving players on his team. They all report directly to him. So I would tend to believe Jerry first on such issues. And where a possible conflict might arise, believe that Jerry allows a player to determine his own level of pain tolerance as long as it doesn't jeopardize team assets beyond a portion of season's scenario.

I know there is the old don't jeopardize the regular season aspect. But do we really want a completely different scenario developing at a polar opposite as is the case in Washington. There, the highest league paid defensive player didn't want to play in a changed defense. Requested a trade and refused to workout in the off season. Upon being required to pass a team wide conditioning test similarly passed by all Cowboy players, he instead claims injury without imaging confirmation.

I think that here, I would just hope for a final dress rehearsal of all players starting and if not, be glad the season will start as desired.

I don't blame Jerry for sunspots either....

MCLs should not be taken lightly for anyone who plays in the trenches.
Let that bad boy heal.
