Special Teams Concerns Rant

I am glad we pulled out a good win. But, the special teams really played horrendous today with those two huge returns. With all these kicks out of the end-zone, they seem to be soft. That frickin' Zeke/Dak penalty did not help at all. They need to put lids on those Salvation Army red kettles since Zeke seems to be obsessed with them. Basically gave our 7 points right back with what, 14:00 minutes left? Very stupid thing to do.

What I've noticed this season regarding the special teams is that our offense is getting pinned down inside the 10 time and time again. I see 3 and 4 ST guys back where the punter is and the blocking downfield is sorely lacking. Fair catch after fair catch around the 10 or even worse, inside the 10. Set up for a return for crying out load.

Coverage on kickoffs and punts is another concern, looks like every player is gunning for the receiver and not manning their section of the field allowing the receiver to cut to an outside lane.

Again, I am happy we won this game, but stunts and bad special teams play will hurt us with good teams like the Saints. Jimmy would have busted a blood vessel with these mistakes, but Garrett will be a happy go lucky guy because he wants to be friends with all the players.

Special teams has been a no show all season. I cannnot think of a time other than FG’s that they have really contributed to a win. Horrible effort all year long.

sT’s have been an issue for a long time.
For years and years. They seen ok at times,es, but not great.

They have a new St’s Coach, promoted from within. There are still a ways to go to improve them. But I will not put it all on him at this point. Get some better depth that also play ST’s. May take until next season.

That has a lot more to do with where the opponents are when they punt the ball.

Of course, it wouldn't hurt if we had someone who can actually do something with the ball - Jourdan Lewis was a punt returner in college - instead of Beas back there fair catching everything (when he's not letting the ball land and bounce).

Been saying this all year ST is a real weak link that is not being fixed and its going to cost us big at some point

Yup, our coverage teams are aweful. Why is it that our gunners are usually blocked out of the play? Or forget LL and his follies.

Notice when Beasley fair catches the ball there are two players watching him. Even when our opponent calls a fair catch, we usually aren't all that close.

Not necessarily, special teams can set up a return and block for a change, get 5 or 10 yards instead of fair catch every single time.

They were not too special today

I rather have kept Switzer over Lenoir. Just his return ability by itself would help.

On the other side when was the last time we had a halfway decent punt return
