Speculation: My Own Thoughts for Now

Can you honestly fault the secondary coach for the performance of the defense as a whole? For instance, he may have coached the heck out of that secondary, does that make it his fault that we couldn't generate a pass rush? That our LBs couldn't cover backs in the flats out of the backfield? Not IMO.

We saw the foolishness of equating a unit's performance to the qualifications of their position coach with Sparano. I would really like Bowles to be promoted. If there's anyone who understands the need for pressure at all costs, it's the guy whose unit has been suffering from that lack for years.

No, I honestly can't. They had to cover guys while the guys up front got little or no pressure. It just raises a red flag for me though.

Bowles wasn't making the same simple coverage calls over and over in games either.

The problem with Bowles isn't that he's performed or not, it's that we have no idea what he's capable of -- he's a complete unknown.

Maybe Cleveland. Or, maybe he's got his own ideas. I doubt Sparano just started watching tape of more aggressive offenses last year - no doubt it was stuff he'd been stewing around and trying tog et on the field.

The one glaring thing that troubles me here is Ellis being able to come back from the Achilles injury. A younger, and arguably better athlete in Kevin Smith couldn't. It's a tough, tough injury to rehab from apparently, and it won't surprise me at all if Ellis' career is done for all practical purposes.

Ellis might be done or might end up on the PUP to start the season, but the surgery for him might not be as bad as K.Smith because Ellis is a DE and the loss of pure speed might not effect him as much as a CB

How do we really know thats all on Sparano though.

The delay in naming Norv seems un-Jerry-like, which leads me to speculate that Turner isn't going to be named.

It makes me wonder if Jerry has got his eyes on a Bears or Colts coach.

One of the nice aspects of Parcells timing is that although the Cowboys got a late start, they don't have quite as much pressure to make an immediate decision.

It isn't like their current candidates are likely to be scooped up by another club, given that the other available head coaching jobs have already been filled.

remember Norv left last night to go back to SF, but is supposed to "talk" with Jerry today...its only 9 am where Norv is, so I'm not sure there really is any "delay"

I'm just wondering why nobody else is hiring Rivera...I have long liked the idea of bringing him here (go back to posts during the seasosn where I was complaining about Zimmer) but he's had a number of interviews now, and isnt getting offers...doesnt mean he is an awful candidate, but there might be somethign there

I believe I read that the Steelers offered Tomlin the job in the 4th quarter of the NFC championship game, only once it was clear that the Bears were going to win.

Yea, I thought you couldn't interview a coach/staff member until their team had completely finished their season?

playoff teams that arnt playing in the 1st rd can allow their assistants to interview during that off week...after that, you cant talk to them anymore until after their teams season is complete...it was some sort of compromise they started within the last yr or two
