I hadnt heard of many cases of this with NFL players. So i started looking it up and i found this stat.

Fifteen players have undergone a microfracture in their 30s. Five of them failed to return to the field, but eight of the 21 players to undergo a microfracture at 25 or younger have never returned. Younger players have averaged more games after surgery -- 33.7 to 26.3, not counting players who are just returning this season.

I think this team needs to stay away from this guy until he rehabs and shows he can do eveyrthing they need him to do without any limitations. I wouldnt touch him tho. Retire Spencer.

I wouldn't touch a contract negotiation with Spencer until he was medically cleared and the first words in it were "Vet minimum with incentives".

Until he can clear medically I would not make an offer to keep him. Now should he be able to clear medically I would still only offer a modest contract with incentives.

Its just so rare for a NFL player to get that micro fracture surgery. Kellen Winslow had this surgery and it took away everything from him. It's not worth it.

True but as I said if he can clear medically and pass physical then I would consider a smaller contract with incentives should he show he is back to full strenght.

I wouldn't offer any incentives. He made 20m the last 2 years and only played one. He had all the leverage and took advantage of it. He signed the Franchise Tag very quickly and failed to come to terms on a long term deal. This is the price you pay for going that route. He is coming off major surgery and has no contract.

According to Broadus he's still limping around and is no where near being healthy to play so I wouldn't even flip the tires on him.

Not trying to defeat him, if he can play and play quality ball then I have no issue with him earning incentives. He did not want the franchise tag but since they could not come to an agreement the tag was placed on him. Players would rather have a long term deal not the franchise tag placed on them.

He signed the tag almost immediately. He turned down several long term contracts, which is his right. He wanted to make sure he got paid and still hit FA. His incentive is to prove he is healthy and wants another contract. If someone wants to give it to him now then let him go.

No he didn't his agent was trying to get a long term deal matter of fact he was franchised as a OLB which paid less than DE which he was to play. Players do not want franchise tag that was the owners, the players know they have more protection with a longer term contract than a 1 year deal.

Spencer is not going to fight with the Cowboys over being franchise tagged as a linebacker rather than a defensive end, even though the designation costs him roughly $600,000 dollars.

The franchise tender for defensive ends is $11.75 million. He was guaranteed $10.6 million when the Cowboys placed the linebacker franchise tag on him Monday.

The situation is only an issue because Spencer played linebacker last year, but will be moved to defensive end in 2014 when the Cowboys switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3.

NFL rules stipulate that the designation goes with the position the player played last season.

Woy has no problem with that. But his goal is to not play under the franchise tag. He said he will negotiate a long-term deal with the Cowboys with defensive end numbers in mind.

"They have the right to franchise as a linebacker," Woy said. "But he will be a defensive end. It would be fair to look at contracts of players that play that position."

Woy said negotiations for a long-term deal are just beginning. The two sides have until mid-July to negotiate a long-term deal.

Spencer signed the Tag on March 12 last year after waiting until late April in 2012. His agent was smart enough to forecast that the DEs would be underpaid. Dallas may have pulled the Tag once they saw what DEs were getting. Spencer got above what DEs were getting even though he was tagged as an OLB.

Players do not want the franchise tag Cowboys placed it on him, no player is asking to be franchised it is used as a means to buy time for a longer term contract. This notion he wanted it? BS he did not.

At a 20% bump from 2012, Spencer obviously didn't mind getting Franchised again. If he was really against it, he would not have signed it so quickly. He took a chance and it was looking good for him right up until he busted his knee.

Fine if you think that his agent disagrees. Players are not seeking franchise tag. But evidently you don't understand that. That is why the TEAM places on the player they are not asking for it.

I think its possible we could be looking at a defensive line without Ware, Hatcher or Spencer.

So pretty much what last year was with Spencer gone for the year and Ware being non exsistent. Hatcher did have a good year but you don't pay a man based on one year. That is what got Jerry in trouble all this time. Especially with Austin.

Signing a piece of paper that guarantees you 10.6m for one year and still being a Free Agent at the end of the season is not a hardship.

He could have signed a multi-year deal and the signing bonus would have probably been around 12m. Not that big of a difference, except he is now locked in for 4 more years. Players don't dislike the Tag as much as they make it seem. It's all part of the negotiations.
