Spencer Nets NFC Defensive Honors
Spencer Nets NFC Defensive Honors

For the first time in his three-year career, outside linebacker Anthony Spencer has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
Spencer recorded five tackles, two sacks, two quarterback pressures and a forced fumble in the Cowboys’ 24-0 shutout win over the Eagles. The award is now the second for the Cowboys in three weeks. DeMarcus Ware was named the NFC’s top defensive player for his effort against the Saints when we recorded two sacks and two forced fumbles.
Spencer becomes the first Cowboys defensive player – other than Ware – to claim this award since Anthony Henry in 2007 and the first pass-rusher or lineman since Leon Lett in 1996.
Spencer has certainly come on strong of late. After recording no sacks or turnovers in the first nine games, Spencer’s fourth-quarter interception against the Commanders seemed to spark this latest surge. He had two sacks against the Raiders the following week, with 1.5 against the Saints and another half-sack against Washington.
In the last seven games, Spencer has recorded all six sacks and 15 of his 34 pressures.

It's unbelievable to me just how fast and furious he has come on towards the back end of the season! I remember when some fans wanted to see Butler replace him opposite Ware, and it now looks as if we have ANOTHER premier pass rusher!

Spencer has done an awesome job all season in many respects, but his stats are actually matching his effect in the last 8 games...We have the most dominant OLB/DE tandem in the league now HANDS DOWN...I'm loving it!!!!

People wrote him off because he wasn't getting sacks, regardless of how much pressure he was getting.

Then again with the whole Scandrick-Jenkins fiasco, I'm not surprised.

Spencer has played very well the whole year. In the first half of the season, he was just a nanosecond away from several sacks and actually had one taken away on a review that should not have been reviewed.

Our defense is doing exactly what the New York Giants did in 2007 and the Indianapolis Colts did in 2006 - peaking down the stretch and playing our best defense when it counts.

I like our chances in this post-season. We'll know all about this team by the end of the first quarter on Saturday.

That was my sleeper on defense I was hoping would awake and become a real playmaker... Man I'm pleasantly surprised.

I still have hope for my offensive sleeper Tweet Bennett, but I may have to wait another year. Dangit.

I do think he needs to pick up his whining however. Production in that area is still WAAAAYYYYY behind its recent norm.

Congratulations Spencer.

The Dynastys last piece is in place, the catalyst is the victory against Philly on Saturday.

Your the QB. It is 3rd and long and your in shotgun formation. Your tired because you spent all night at a bar eating Mexican food and not letting Cowboys fans take a picture with you. You have to make this first down to keep your team in the game. The sweat is burning your eyes. You take your first pre-snap read...

You look to your left and see Ware is standing up looking at you, staring through you as if you are already dead. You call your tight end in motion to help chip Ware. Your starting to shake. You say a silent prayer, "Oh please God make sure they block this guy!"

The play clock is getting lower, you need to get this ball snapped. You feel a tingle in your spine as you start to panic when Jay Ratliff yells from his stance that he saw my tweet calling him a "punk" and I was going to "get mine". You think to yourself, "Oh @#$% I am in trouble!"

Finally, you look to your right and see Anthony Spencer and it appears that he chanting. What is he doing? This is starting to freak you out. You stop your cadence briefly enough to hear what Spencer is chanting and your blood curdles as your realize he is chanting, "Redrum...Redrum...Redrum"

Ok, now your stomach hurts. Lets get this play off so I can win this game and go home.

<Play clock>

You quickly call a time out and then...

You can't help but be excited by the play of Spencer and Jenkins over the latter half of this year. They are performing at a pro bowl level at this point. When added to the high level of production we already get from Ware and Ratliff week in and week out and the age and contract statuses of all of these core players, it really looks as if the defense will be set for awhile. I am hoping that we can find a coverage lb in the draft (perhaps Jason Williams will turn into that) and maybe a safety will top notch ball skills to go with Sensabaugh and this defense will be downright SCARY. Props to Wade and Jerry for making good draft picks in '07 and '08 and good FA signings in '09 to elevate this defense to a higher level.

Agreed. Towards the beginning of the season, it seemed Jenkins would be a shoe-in for most improved player on our team this season. And while Jenkins has continued to improve to the point that I now refer to him as our #1 corner, I think Spencer has made a strong case for that honor as well in the second half of the season.

Jenkins and Spencer are both playing lights out at their respective positions, to the point that they are not only productive players, but recognized among the league's elite! I hope they can continue to help us win throughout the playoffs as well.
