And I've lived in Boise 28 years, Crawford is the best DL to come though Boise State since I can remember, I have high hopes for him this year and especially next.

a year is a very long time.

anyone who thinks anything is certain in a year is crazy.

Agree. I don't think it's a given that Spencer is gone. I think it depends on the development of Kyle Wilber and Tyrone Crawford.

If neither shows he has the ability to at least be an adequate replacement for Spencer, I believe Dallas will tag Spencer yet again. Obviously that's not ideal, but I can't see Dallas meeting Spencer's demands on a long-term deal at his age, but if he plays lights-out and far above the others, the Cowboys will not want to lose him while he's at his peak.

I also don't see Spencer complaining about such a deal, considering what his average salary for the three franchised years would be.

I live in Utah and although I don't follow College ball all that much, Boise State has some damn fine football players and a great football program.

I'd normally agree with you but we are uber-tight to the cap next year. We have bigger priorities with Dez, Lee and Tyron possibly upcoming. We already have massive dollars tied up in Ware with tons of dead money if we release him and we likely have a huge chunk of dead money to eat up with Rat's extension. I just don't see how we can make them all fit under the cap. Our DL this year is costing us $32M which is about 1/4th of our cap. That is just not sustainable, IMO. We have other areas of the team we need to address. If Jerry hadn't been paying mega-salaries to good players it may have been possible to do Spencer's deal. I just really believe there isn't money to give him even a premium salary let alone an elite one.
Right now, it does look like cap situation isn't all that good next year, but with 2mil cap increase and if we rollover 7-8 mil (if we don't extend or sign anyone else) and restructure Romo and several salaried players and waving players like Orten, Bern, Scandrick, Livings, (and maybe Austin) we can be about 25-30 mil under the cap, more than enough sign several or our own good players and then some.

The salary cap gets discussed every year about how the Cowboys will not have much money left "next year". But, somehow, every year, they seem to do what needs to get done..

But, Spencer's asking price is just gong to be to much and he seems like he and his agent are getting to greedy for the Cowboys to handle.

Yup, I agree with you about Spencer's asking price, way too high for sure.

There are untold variables which is why IMHO it is silly to assume they all play out a certain way.
Crawford and Wilber are variables.
Hatcher/Ratliff is too (maybe team really needs Crawford inside next year)....
So is Ware and of course Spencer himself.
And then there is the next NFL draft.
And the cost to resign other guys like Lee and Dez.

To me this is the type of stuff that gets kicked around in the dead period we are in now.

I would still try to get something done before the July 15th deadline. There is almost zero chance they would tag Spencer again, so they have 2 weeks to extend him or lose him. I would rather overpay a little to keep him, but it looks like Spencer wants them to overpay a lot.

Additionally, to those saying Spencer is in the seventh year. He played sparingly his first two years. He doesn't have the traditional wear and tear of a 7 year player.
