What is Spencer's future as a Cowboy? Are we going to be able to sign him; trade him or just let him play under the franchise tag? Did anyone hear the type of money he wants?

I think they are getting close to a contract with either Spence or Romo. I'm still hoping for a tag and trade for a second or third. It would really help this year. Get it done Jerry.

We will resign him and tony to new contracts. Hopefully we put a way out in both of those so we don't get a huge cap hit if they both fail in the coming years

I'm hoping for the same thing. A 2nd or a 3rd would be great. I realize that Spencer may be 29; signing him to a large contract worries me. Dez,Lee contracts will be coming soon. I don't want to see is losing them.

We are going to most likely sign him to a new contract. That's what was indicated by J Woy as well.

IMO best options in order for the team are:

1. trade to another team for pick

2. plays under franchise tender for 1 year and leaves and we get possible comp pick

3. we sign him to a long-term contract

Maybe another possibility is to pull the tag and let him be a free agent. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Cowboys still have to clear another $5M or so by Mar 12 to accomodate the tag on Spencer.

Perhaps they can't clear the room and have to rescind the tag. I don't think that would be a bad idea. Let the market dictate what he can get and maybe the cowboys can match or come close. I don't see any team breaking the bank ($10M+/yr) for Spencer. And I'm guessing the Cowboys will consider all trade offers for Spencer.

I'm pretty sure SJ has a plan to get under the cap. They have a plan in place, which has to include restructuring Romo's contract.

Dallas will never lose them unless the Cowboys want to lose them. Some day people will understand this.

I don't think it does. Some of the restructures haven't been done yet and more are likely on their way.

I do think a new contract for Romo would allow Dallas to have space to bring in some free agents, but if Dallas wants to bring in some FAs, that's when it will get done or when other moves will be made to open up space (such as Free's contract being restructured or Free being released).

I would let him play under the tag so Dallas can see if he's worth a multiyear deal at DE.

Signing him long-term now would be premature IMO, and trying to trade him without a replacement in hand is just a silly way to do business.

Um, how is a rookie picked in the third round going to help us more than a All-Pro defensive player?

Wow.

1. For one he is NOT ALL PRO.

2. the only reason he made the probowl was that the guy in front dropped out

3. It took him 5 years before he then had his career year. Anyone thinking he will be that good again is ignoring history.

Whatever. The point is that it is extremely unlikely that a second or third round rookie will immediately replace the production of a guy who has been a staple of our defense for six seasons.

We simply don't know yet. Just last week Jerry said his number and Spencer number were probably far apart. Dallas protected themselves with franchise tag. If Spencer doesn't come down closer to Jerry number he will play for another one year contract. Which makes perfect sense to me because you get to see what he looks like in new defensive scheme.

Agreed, no one picked in the 3rd round will have the impact that Spencer will have. Not sure why everyone gets all hot and bothered over 3rd or 4th round picks. I guess we should trade Spencer for Matt Johnson(last years 4th). Brilliant.

NFL Network - Cowboys happy to have Spencer. But, open to trade.
Rapoport of NFL network / NFL.com - As I said on TA: # Cowboys would be happy if Anthony Spencer was with them in '13. BUT they are open to trading him in thin pass-rush market

From ranch report

1st round pick would get it done for me!

Heck yeah! Personally, I'd even take a second, but no less than that (maybe a third and a fourth).

Not gonna lie...I'd think about a 2nd also, and maybe a conditional 1st if he hits certain milestones in 2013.

EDIT: Dang, I wish Al Davis was still around...
