Memorable promises over the years
Oklahoma superstar Courtney Paris is hardly the first athlete to make a guarantee. Here are some of the memorable promises made over the years:
→Babe Ruth, 1932: With the Yankees on their way to a World Series rout of the Cubs, Ruth stepped into the batter’s box, pointed his bat toward the deepest part of Wrigley Field, then smashed a ball out of the park.
→Joe Namath, 1969: The New York quarterback vowed that his upstart Jets would beat the Colts, widely believed to be the greatest football team the sport had ever seen, in Super Bowl III. It became the guarantee by which all others are measured not only because Namath was first but also he was right.
→Jimmy Johnson, 1993: Then the Dallas Cowboys coach, Johnson predicted before the 1993 NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers that the Cowboys would "beat their rear ends and then go on to win the Super Bowl ... you can put that in three-inch headlines.” Johnson and the Cowboys did just what he guaranteed.
