SportsDay's Todd Archer answers your Cowboys questions (03/17/2010)
11:03 I'm still figuring out my brackets for the NCAA Tournament, but let's get this started. I can't find a three seed I like in the Final Four. Oh well.

With the involuntary work outs beginning this week. How is Valley Ranch looking? Is the most of the time present and ready to get this thing going again. Where's Tony?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:03 Jorge
11:04 The off-season workouts haven't started this week. They'll start in a couple of weeks, I believe. A lot of players are already working out. Tony Romo has been there already. Orlando Scandrick told me he'll get there Monday to start working out a week earlier.

What's been up with the saftey pos? Are we seriously going to draft another SS??
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:04 mexicanbarryswitzer
11:06 I wouldn't get hung up on strong safety or free safety. The position is really the same in a lot of ways. I think the Cowboys will draft a safety at some point, possibly in the first round. I don't see Taylor Mays being a fit because he's considered a box safety by many. Maybe his Combine performance changes that image but you have to trust what you see on tape more.

Any chance Scandrick gets moved to safety, especially if another corner is drafted?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:06 Guest
11:06 I haven't heard that talk this year. But even last year the move wouldn't have been a full-time deal anyway. We'll have some more on Scandrick on the blog later today.

11:07 No. And if this wasn't a family chat, we'd have another adjective for the answer.

With the unlikelyhood of Earl Thomas being there at 27, my opinion is either Terrence Cody or Nate Allen at pick 27! They need to continue to find a true free safety. How long as Woody been gone? Also, if Ratliff ever went down for more than 1-2 games, that run D would turn to mush! Thoughts?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:07 Steve in Syracuse, NY
11:09 That might be a little rich for Allen. And he had only one pick last year. I want a guy who has a nose for the ball a little more than that. Cody is interesting, but I'm not sure they would go there that early. I know a lot of people want to move Ratliff to DE but I'm not one of those. I think what makes him special on the nose would make him less special at defensive end.

Who does Jerry Jones listen to more: Stephen or Wade?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:09 Miranda
11:11 Good question. More? Hard to say. I would say Stephen but that's really just a guess. He listens to both guys. And, honestly, the head coach has a lot of sway. If the coach does or does not want a player, then Jerry will most often side with the coach. We can put to examples otherwise, but he doesn't want the coach to have a roster of players he doesn't necessarily want to coach.

So are the Cowboys really counting on Cletus Jordan to return kicks and punts even though he has little experience? Has he given them any reason to believe he'll be proficient? Along with that, does making him the default kick/punt return mean the Cowboys might pass on a drafting someone that could be a return guy and possibly WR as well? (Gilyard, Shipley, etc...)
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:11 Aaron
11:14 Umm, no. I'm sure he'll get a chance to be in the mix but to say they're counting on him to be the guy is way, way, way too much of a stretch at this point. He's down the list at both spots, IMO. I think you'll see Kevin Ogletree do more kick return stuff. Maybe he gets into the punt mix but that spot needs more quick than fast. I'm a Gilyard fan, so I'd like to see the Cowboys take a shot with him. But I'd be surprised to see Gordon make the final roster, to tell you the truth.

What are the odds that Atogwe is wearing a star next year? Odds that Ken Hamlin isn't?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:14 Aaron
11:15 I hate the odds thing, but I'd say the more likely option would be Hamlin would be elsewhere. Teams feel that the Rams put the low tender on Atogwe just so a team could do a long-term deal for them. I like Atogwe's productivity but I think there's some injury worries there more than just the shoulder surgery.

do you think the cowboys will get rid of flo adams?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:15 joe from jville
11:18 When free agency began, I thought so. The longer it goes, then maybe not.. He has a $2.5 million roster bonus due in June, so there's no rush. Maybe they want to see if they get a guy in the draft first before making a move. Adams has value to this team and cutting him would be hard because of the unknown in either a draft pick or Doug Free. I like the way Free played last year in Marc Colombo's absence. Adams has been underappreciated here. Despite his penalties, he is solid enough. But last year he wore down and I think it's better to cut out too soon than too late. How do the Cowboys think? Not sure. Maybe we'll know more as the draft gets closer.

I know Roy didn't seem to produce last year but he did have something like 7 TD's and for the most part when he and Romo were on the same page it was pretty good stuff. So why does Roy take the lion's share of the blame?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:18 Aaron
11:21 Because other people produced with Romo. He is not the best of route runners. He seemed to save his "wow" catches in practice because Wade Phillips always talked about that, but we didn't see them in the games. Maybe another off-season together will help, but something that should be thought of here: the wide outs that have succeeded with Tony Romo have been fast guys: Terrell Owens, Terry Glenn, Miles Austin. Patrick Crayton has had success too, but he's had the success you'd expect of a No. 3 wide out. Williams' numbers have been OK for a No. 3 guy but he's being paid like a No. 1 guy.

Todd, I am a lifelong cowboy fan up here in niantic CT., I know most of cowboy nation is getting frustrated by the lack of movement by the boys in free agency , are they waiting for a particular player to get released, or is the price still to high for who is out there, I recall reading where Jerry said they would be active in the second and third wave, what are you hearing out of vally ranch?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:21 John Lake
11:23 I'm not hearing anything at Valley Ranch this week because it's Spring Break and it's pretty dead over there right now. I don't see an unrestricted guy that they've missed out on yet. The restricted market takes longer because teams generally wait until the last moment to grab a guy and make it hard for a team to match. Next week is the Owners' Meetings in Orlando, so I wouldn't expect much next week either.

Do you think Jerry will give Miles a long term deal this year and when during the season?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:23 Comment from Mike
11:25 I think he wants to, but it's not going to happen before a new CBA, in my opinion. There's too many unknowns out there. What if a cap comes back? How do they come up with a common ground? How does Roy Williams' $45 million contract factor into the Austin talks? I don't think this will be as easy to get done as DeMarcus Ware's contract and that took until the second half of the year. The Cowboys don't want to lose Austin. Austin doesn't want to leave the Cowboys. If a deal gets worked out, then I say it'll happen toward the end of the year.

Do the Cowboys have a quarterback they may be grooming to be ready a few years down the round? If not, will they address that late in the draft?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:25 Trey
11:26 They drafted Stephen McGee in the fourth round last year to be that guy. Is he? Hard to say. I need to see more of him in the off-season camps and training camp. He's got the arm. He's got a good head on his shoulder. I want to see more development. That being said, I'm of the belief you take a quarterback every year in the draft.

Jerry talked a lot about 10-11 new faces...but yet they haven't made even an inkling of a move in free agency. I can't imagine we're going to have a lot of draft picks make the team this year with so many of last year's coming back from injury...so where are these 10-11 going to come from?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:27 Aaron
11:28 So much has been made of the 10-11 new faces. Last year the Cowboys had 19 new faces. The year before that it was 10. In 2007 it was 15. So what Jones said wasn't really earth shattering. And I think he was counting on guys that didn't play last year - Brandon Williams, Mike Hamlin, maybe Robert Brewster - as new faces. They have six picks. Most of them will make the team. They'll have one or two undrafted guys make the team. And I'm sure at some point they'll sign some free agents that will make the team.

Larry Johnson doesn't scare me on the Commanders half as much as when they picked up Clinton Portis. With Felix, Marion and Tashard here, are Cowboys fans spoiled on how hard it is to land a premium running back?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:29 Clay
11:30 Is it hard to land a premium running back? Barber and Choice were fourth round picks. I think running back is actually one of the easier positions to find a player.

I saw a mock draft that had Dex Bryant dropping to the Cowboys? Should we draft a WR if someone of his caliber is still available?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:30 Lee
11:31 I tend to believe you should follow your draft board. There are always exceptions - Brady Quinn in 2007 comes to mind - but if Bryant is there at No. 27 and the Cowboys had him much higher on their board, then, yes, they shoudl take him. I know Jerry Jones likes his wide outs but if you're getting a top-10 or 15 talent at No. 27, you take him.

how much longer do we have to put up with "Jason Garretts everybody know its coming offense"? He never make real time game adjustments. I am sick of him!!!!!
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:31 Tank Legends
11:34 This is the wrong place to ask this question because I believe Garrett will be the next head coach of this team. Does he have improvements to make? Sure. He's not a finished product. No coach is. He had the third-ranked offense last year. Now, they need more points. Their red zone work has to improve a lot. Jason Witten needs to be more involved down there, IMO. Sorry, but if you're sick of him you might want to just watch the team play defense because I don't see him going away.

Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:34 m-diddy
11:35 Barber is getting beat up at tailback. I can't see him lasting as a fullback at 222 pounds. I wouldn't see him as a Richie Anderson type of fullback. And you're not going to pay him the kind of money he's getting this year to be a fullback.

Todd, any new news with the safety situationa s it pertains to Atogwe or Sharper? Is it possible the Cowboys could get both because of the low tender on Atogwe? If you had just one choice, which one would you choose?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:36 A Jizzle
11:37 Both? No chance. One? I'd say Atogwe if you're thinking longer term but Sharper's ball skills would be an element that this secondary doesn't have right now. He would be a good fit as far as the ballhawk is concerned. But he is getting up there. If he comes in at the right price on a shorter deal, then OK. The longer it takes, I'd say the better the chances that he wouldn't be in NO in 2010. My gut, however, tells me he's going back to the Saints.

Any chance you see the cowboys getting Golden Tate in the first round, followed up by a Chad Jones in the second? I feel like that would be the best case scenario for the boys'...Tate will be the next Steve Smith
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:39 Guest
11:40 I like both players there actually. I like Tate's ability to play bigger than he is. He has some special skills to him. Jones, too. Still, I'd be surprised if the Cowboys take a wide out at No. 27 after all of the love Jerry Jones has professed for the group currently on the roster.

11:40 [Comment From Eddie in TylerEddie in Tyler: ]
Do you believe that Barber's role will decrease as he has evidently hit a wall, and do you see the Cowboys looking to deal him this off season? Personally I would like to see a lot more of Tashard Choice, and just enough of Felix Jones to keep him off the trainer's table.
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:40 Eddie in Tyler
11:42 It would be hard to trade Barber because of his contract, but if a team is willing to take him on, I think I would consider it. They need to play Choice more, IMO. He can make an impact in a lot of ways. If they do move Barber, then they would need a running back this year in the draft too. Now, that's what I would do. Stephen Jones is on record saying he sees all three backs returning this year.

I see Newman having a couple of years left in him and you can never have to many cornerbacks. Does Ball have the tools needed to be an nfl corner or is drafting one something that needs to be done?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:42 Concrete & Water
11:43 Orlando Scandrick would be the next guy up as a starter if something happened to Newman. I like Ball but I don't know if he is a full-time player either at CB or S. He's versatile and every roster needs guys like that. As far as drafting cornerbacks, I think you do that every year because you're right you can never have enough of them.

Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:44 Eddie in Tyler
11:44 In 2011? I don't know. Actually, I think it would be wise for the Cowboys to extend Kosier for a year or two. He was consistent last year and is a glue guy. I wouldn't be too quick to hurry him out the door.

In regard to Atogwe and St. Louis just wanting someone to set market value on him, doesn't that seem kinda brave to do considering someone could put a " poison pill" in his offer and they would never be able to match it??
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:45 Heywood
11:46 It might be dangerous, but it's how the Rams have played it and so far nobody has come calling. And while poison pills are not illegal, the NFL frowns on them greatly. With this labor situation, I can't see a team going out of its way to do that to another team when the owners have to show some kind of solidarity in the negotiations with the NFLPA.

11:47 Did you watch last year's offense? That was what they did. Not sure how much more they can do. It's up to Bennett to earn his playing time and how many passes that go his eway. It's not on the coaches to get him the ball. He has to prove he can do it first.

Do you think anyone will pick up Greg Ellis?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:47 Eddie in Tyler
11:50 I do, but let's look at the Cowboys as a possibility for Ellis. I think it would make some sense, but only after you exhausted your looks at Brandon Williams and Victor Butler. Ellis had seven sacks last year in Oakland and there were whispers out of there that he had a knee condition. The third linebacker usually has to play some sort of special teams' role. Ellis wouldn't be that guy. And his salary would be fully guaranteed if he's on the books that first week of the season. Las tyear the Cowboys got rid of progress stoppers to help young guys come through. I think they need to give Butler and Williams - and maybe another draft pick next month - the chance to fill in that role behind DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer. If they don't show in the preseason they can do it, then make a run at Ellis if he's still there.

Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:51 Marty
11:52 I think it would be Campbell or, if you believe some mock drafts, then Jimmy Clausen. I actually feel bad for Campbell. I think he has some talent but he had to put up with a lot of stuff last off-season and he's had like 19 offensive systems since high school. I think the kid can be pretty good.

I know that it was a bit of a number's game with the roster in camp with Matt Moore, but who do you think has to take responsibility for not keeping Moore on the roster and allowing him to slip through the cracks. I am pretty sure that if the Cowboys still had him right now, they would have been able to get a second round pick for him....your thoughts?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:54 Jeff
11:57 The great Matt Moore. Maybe I have to eat some crow on this because I didn't think it was that big of a deal at the time. I was surprised Carolina picked him up. The Cowboys tried to slip him through to the practice squad but the Panthers picked him up. Who's to blame? Well, if Jerry Jones makes the decisions, then Jones is to blame. But if they did keep him, I don't know if they would get a second rounder for him because he wouldn't have played. Maybe he would've pushed Brad Johnson in 2008 but we don't know for sure. And before we pronounce Moore a full-fledged starter in the NFL, let's see how he does when he's the starte from Day 1.

What does the un-capped year mean to the fan? I know that free agent contracts were expected by the union to be a lot wealthier, but that has not panned out. Does the un-capped year have any affect on current player salaries and can a team cut a player without having to pay a pro-rated penalty for the signing bonus?
Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:59 Eddie in Tyler
12:01 Here's what's happened - the top tier guys have gotten paid. The second level guys haven't. That's been a little different. Not only is there no cap but there is no floor either. As far as we can tell there is no penalty for cutting a player this year as far as prorated signing bonus is concerned. Some people will say the league could retroactively do some accounting for that but I can't see that happening.

11:30 Is it hard to land a premium running back? Barber and Choice were fourth round picks. I think running back is actually one of the easier positions to find a player.

11:40 I like both players there actually. I like Tate's ability to play bigger than he is. He has some special skills to him. Jones, too. Still, I'd be surprised if the Cowboys take a wide out at No. 27 after all of the love Jerry Jones has professed for the group currently on the roster.

Wednesday March 17, 2010 11:42 Concrete & Water
11:43 Orlando Scandrick would be the next guy up as a starter if something happened to Newman. I like Ball but I don't know if he is a full-time player either at CB or S.
