Springs scheduled to visit Philly

March 3, 2009 5:57 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

The Eagles just announced that Shawn Springs is headed to town tonight for a visit and will meet with reporters Wednesday. Springs became expendable in Washington when DeAngelo Hall was signed to a long-term contract Friday.

You normally don't issue a press release when you're not planning to sign a player. Springs is a physical cornerback who could also help out at safety now that Brian Dawkins has left the building.

There was some initial interest from Dallas in Springs, but it looks like he'll end up in Philly. It's interesting to see guys such as Chris Canty and Springs stay in the division. We'll let you know if we hear anything else.

I'd rather keep the money and try and sign Burnett and draft a CB or two this year to replace Henry/Pacman.

I'm ambivalent about Springs. I'd take him for the right money. And I think he would be a good FS.

Well, who knows? Maybe he's visiting all other teams first and then leaving it to Dallas to make the final and hopefully lasting impression. It's a distinct possibility.

Hamlin is the starting FS for Dallas... He's NO strong safety (see Baltimore game film). What Dallas needs is a thumper who can also drop back in coverage and not be a huge liability.

It seems like the roles of the FS and SS are becoming less and less defined. Nowadays you need 2 guys who can both cover and tackle. Now, I'm admittedly not a football Xs and Os guy, so there may be some nuances of each position that I'm not accounting for.

Also, I'm not clear as how people necessarily think that they can take a once-good, but now aging CB, plug him into the safety spot, and expect excellent results. I don't think it's that easy.

I'd like to have Springs but it's appeared, thus far, that he's not had a whole lot of interest in being here since he's been going to other places instead.

Who knows maybe he'll still wind up visiting here and signing.

Oh come on Jerry!!!! this is BS!!!

Nah. Its part of the game. he has to go out and get the biggest offer he can, then come to jerry with it to match.

There's a reason he's seeing all these teams before he comes here. Book it.

Well NY and Philly are closer to DC than Dallas...

Looks like Springs is going to be too expensive, I would have loved to have him here, but only with a cap friendly contract like Brooking got.

If we are talking a couple of mill per season, the Eagles can have him. He is to injury prone to sink that type of coin into him, especially with Jenkins and Scandrik coming on.

The Eagles understand the value of CB's. They went out and signed Samuel when they already had Lito Shepard and Sheldon Brown. They had 2 probowlers starting and went out and brought in another probowler. They understand the value of pass coverage. It would be a smart move for them to sign him even as a nickel back. With the pass happy NFL these days it wouldnt hurt to have another really good corner to replace Lito Shepard.

The shame is that we just traded away our starting corner for a player that will more than likely never play for us (kitna), and now jerry is willing to watch as our divisional rival signs the player that shut down our best receiver last year.

If the eagles want him they will get him. I live here near philly and its not very often that they let someone get out od town without a contract.

I dont know what Springs wants money wise. But a starting caliber CB who call fill in as a solid starter if one of your corners goes down is valuable.
Especially with TNew's history of injuries and an unproven 2nd year player on the other side.

Springs would be a great find if no one else wanted him as a starter. Where would we put him? Do we want to push Scandrick and Jenkins back to the bench? Or do we want to pay Springs to back them up?

Nope...we don't need Springs.

Right now we have 3 starters who all started games last season...I'd start Jenkins and Newman and bring Scandrick in at the slot just like last season. That leaves us with Ball as a backup, and we can add more depth with lesser veteran CBs or by drafting well at the position again this April.

Hamlin is our starting fS...period...even in an off year, he's better at it than bringing in a CB like Springs and thinking he can play FS...everyone seems to think every CB in the league can play FS on a whim...just move him there. Look around the league and find out how many great CBs were able to become good FS's in their waning years...some, but not many at all.

Hamlin is a pro-bowl FS who will return to form this season...he's still young, and he is the QB of our defense. We'll find a SS in the draft...we may return Davis and/or Roy for all we know.

Jerry is taking it slow and signing the guys we wanted...obviously, from the Brooking story, there is a plan...we haven't gone after a single player who signed elsewhere yet.

We see two LBs who started for Wade in Atlanta signed...clearly, Wade has a role and a voice in the team that will save his job or seal his doom also, as he should.

I like the way this is developing, and I think the draft is going to be a lot of fun this year.
