Cowboys coach Jason Garrett evaluated Tony Romo’s first few days of training camp and acknowledged that the quarterback’s first practice was only so-so, as some observers had suggested.
“Clearly, when he first started practicing, on the first day, he wasn’t quite himself,” Garrett said, looking back at the first three practices. “But the second day was better, the third day was better. He’s moving around. You see him getting away from the line of scrimmage, you see him reacting like he normally reacts.”
Sunday was Romo’s first practice with the team since surgery in April to remove a cyst from his back. The Cowboys held him out of the OTAs and mini-camp. Even now, Garrett said they’re trying not to overload him, and he’s not throwing as many pat-and-go passes.
“The ball is coming out of his hand better,” Garrett said. “You know, he hasn’t been in this environment in a little while. But he’s responded well to the work. We’ve monitored his throwing a little bit in the individual periods. He’s not getting in the exact rotation when we’re just throwing routes on air.
“But he’s getting a chance to throw to Miles and Dez and some of the other first-tier guys. He’s responded well to everything, and he’s getting better every day.”
