Sean Lee wanted to be “a Cowboy for life,” said his agent, Mike McCartney.

“Sean was adamant,” McCartney said Wednesday after working out a six-year contract extension for Lee with the Cowboys.

The deal is worth $42 million with a $10 million signing bonus. It runs through 2019 and could be worth $51 million with incentives.

McCartney said he and the team began talking after the second practice of training camp, and that once the Cowboys saw him running full speed, they wanted to get the deal done.

Lee also wanted to get the deal done.

“It was important to him. He wants to focus on football,” McCartney said. “He is obsessed with being a great player more than any player I have worked with. He truly is thrilled about getting the contract done. He doesn’t have to worry about anything but being a great Dallas Cowboy. He is special.”

McCartney acknowledged that the value of the contract reflects an injury history with Lee, a second-round pick in 2010 out of Penn State. He came to the Cowboys with a knee injury. Last year, he missed more than half the year with a broken toe.

He also missed a game in 2011 because of a hand injury.

“Sean has missed some time. He is willing to bet on himself and earn the higher amount with play time,” McCartney said. “He is a key component to the defense, and he is going to be there for years to come. He looks great with that star on his helmet. I’m thrilled for him and his family.”

The Cowboys did not announce the signing.
