Rookie safety J.J. Wilcox is away from training camp, tending to an illness in his family. But he did not give off the impression of a player with a personal problem, at least not to Brandon Carr, and that impressed the Cowboys veteran.
“Did not know what was going on,” Carr said. “And that just kind of shows you his maturity level, as well. It’s a big issue, but at the same time, he didn’t really let it affect his play or let it be known or show it out here when it’s time to come out here and go to work. But now he’s doing what he has to do to take care of his family. We understand that, but at the same time, he did a good job of coming out here and still executing and doing his job.”
Wilcox made an early impression in training camp, and he has shown up – both good and bad – in each of the first two preseason games. He was criticized by coach Jason Garrett for not going full speed on some special teams plays, but he also has an interception and 12 tackles.
“It’s very hard when it’s real-life situations that kind of make football take a back seat to what’s going on,” Carr said. “This is a game for us. It’s an honor and a privilege for us to play. But at the same time, we still have family and people we care dearly for. When you have your mom or somebody that’s been there your whole life, it kind of makes football take a back seat.”
