Brian Waters was being asked if he had the offense down enough to play Sunday when Jason Garrett walked by.

"He's got it all down," Garrett said as he continued to stride by.

Waters laughed.

The 36-year-old hasn't played since the 2011 season, but he said he is getting closer to his playing weight and closer to being ready to play. No one is ruling him out for Sunday, though it seems unlikely he would be ready to play after not showing up to Valley Ranch until Wednesday when he signed a one-year deal worth up to $3 million.

Mackenzy Bernadeau is expected to start at right guard. The question is whether Waters will be active on game day.

"I’m still working, still progressing," Waters said Friday. "I’m going to wait and see what the coaches say."

Waters missed training camp with the Patriots in 2011 but still earned his sixth Pro Bowl. He has spent the past three practice days knocking the rust off.

"He’s done a good job trying to get himself acclimated to what we’re doing on offense and certainly his conditioning as well," Garrett said. "He hasn’t played football in a long time. But he’s certainly made progress. He’s had a good week. You see him getting better and better every day. We’ll make those roster decisions here in the next couple of days."
