Weakside linebacker Bruce Carter was standing on the sideline, helmet in hand, most of the second half. Head coach Jason Garrett intimated Carter was injured. Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said it was all part of the team’s plan to get Ernie Sims in the game. Carter said it was a coaches’ decision.
“It’s my job as a player just to go out there and play and just go out there and do the best I can,” Carter said. “That’s out of my control.”
The only thing for certain is Carter was a mismatch in coverage against the 5-foot-8, 200-pound Danny Woodhead out of the backfield. Woodhead beat Carter for a 26-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and then, after Woodhead’s 13-yard score against Carter in the third quarter pulled the Chargers to within 21-20, Carter wasn’t seen on the field again.
"I could have done a lot better on some of my coverages, staying on top," Carter said. "That’s something I’ve got to work at in practice every day, just working on my technique and stuff like that. But I think overall as a team and as a defense, we’ve just got to play a lot better."
Carter, in his third season with only 15 career starts, shouldered the blame for the 401 passing yards and three touchdowns Philip Rivers had for the Chargers.
“There are no excuses,” Carter said. “It’s my fault. I take all that, and I’ve just got to play better.”
