Brandon Carr said the Commanders and receiver Pierre Garcon made some plays on him, but he is at peace with the way he played because the week away from practice last week allowed him to find himself.
“It’s been a good week, just a week for me to get closer to myself spiritually,” he said. “It’s a good feeling. Today was the culmination of the great week I had, just figuring out who I am and finding myself throughout the process of being sick. There’s a reason why things happen to you. And then you sit down and kind of just think about my life and then the season in a whole.”
Garcon finished with 11 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown on 18 targets. Carr – who smothered Garcon in the October game in Arlington – was not on him exclusively Sunday, but he spent most of the day on him before Orlando Scandrick took over late.
“He was having a tough time, but it wasn’t all on B-Carr,” safety Barry Church said. “Sometimes he would play outside leverage, and we would have people in the hook area that weren’t there. It seemed like it was all on him. But he’s a great corner. He battles, and doesn’t complain about not getting a lot of help because he’s one of the top corners out there. I appreciate him for it. He’s a playmaker, and we need him on this team.”
Carr said he still felt effects from the illness. He said he felt cold, and he wore long sleeves for the first time.
“Today, they made some plays on me,” Carr said. “I was upset about it. I have a lot of pride, and I try to go out there and do my best each and every time. I knew it was going to be harder this time just for simple fact I knew they were going to adjust and attack me differently, find some holes in our coverages.”
Carr said the illness “kind of shut me down,” leaving him a lot of time to himself.
“You don’t realize how much you miss the game until you’re away from it,” he said. “It was nerve-wracking just being at home and being out of the loop of what’s going on. It’s an NFL game. You want to keep your sword sharp. I missed a few days. Had to shake some rust off in the game. When it came down to it, can’t think about nothing else except making plays and winning this ballgame.
“But at the end of the day, none of that matters because it comes down to the end of the game, it comes down to the nut-cutting time, when it’s the last drive and you have to stand up and deliver,” he said. “Because that’s all people remember, is your last performance.”
