Defensive end DeMarcus Ware and running DeMarco Murray were sidelined in the second quarter with quad and knee injuries.
So backup defensive end Kyle Wilber and running back Joseph Randle helped key the 31-16 victory against the Commanders with a sack, forced fumble and a touchdown.
Wilber helped turn back a Commanders rally when sacked quarterback Robert Griffin III and ripped the ball out of hands on the way to ground. Randle made it count with a bull-dozing 1-yard touchdown run.
It was in keeping with has been a season long thing for the seemingly perpetually injured Cowboys since training camp.
"We have had a few situations like this over the course of the seaosn already where these guys just have to be ready," coach Jason Garrett said. "They have to be ready each day in practice and in ball games. We got some guys banged up. Some guys stepped up."
