Last year, the Cowboys worked a first-round trade with the San Francisco 49ers that may or may not have been arranged in advance of the draft.

This year, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said it has been quiet on the phones. Nobody is really calling, and the Cowboys aren't chasing, he said Tuesday at Valley Ranch at the team’s annual pre-draft press conference.

“Those opportunities, you don’t usually create them or set them up,” he said. “You can use your logic; you can say this club may be a candidate for a trade if that’s what you want to think about at that particular time.

“Now, do we go through the gyrations of trades and go through the possibilities of the phone ringing and us picking the phone up? Of course we do. You look and try to be as ready as you can if that should happen. But in general, we haven’t been talking to anybody about trades.”

The Cowboys hold the 16th pick in the first round. The draft begins at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“It usually is a clock- or day-of-draft-type of dynamic,” Jones said. “But I would be surprised if there would not be trade opportunities by the time you get to where we’re going to be picking, or certainly after.”
