The Cowboys brought back a former practice squad player, linebacker Orie Lemon, in case DeVonte Holloman isn’t ready for Sunday’s game or can’t finish it.

Holloman was limited in practice Wednesday, his first in pads since recovering from a spinal contusion that kept him out five weeks. But the Cowboys are hedging their bets on the rookie linebacker, who would play strongside linebacker against the Giants on Sunday.

“Any time you’re dealing with a neck and a back, you want to be extra careful about it,” coach Jason Garrett said. “So, he hit in practice and was OK but just wanted to make sure that we could bring someone else in and give him ample amount of time to come back from that.”

Garrett did not commit to Holloman playing.

“We’ll see in the next couple of days how he does,” he said. “It’s better to have that option now as you’re making this evaluation.”

Lemon spent 2011 on the practice squad with the Cowboys after coming to training camp as an undrafted player out of Oklahoma State. He played in four games in 2012, mainly on special teams, but ended the season on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury.

Garrett said Lemon will pick things up quickly, despite having been with the Cowboys when they were a 3-4 defense and not a 4-3 like they are now.

“He’s been an inside linebacker in his life,” Garrett said. “And so, he’s a guy that we feel like is pretty smart in terms of picking things up and, again, has a comfort level with being here. So, excited about getting him back.”

Garrett said Lemon, who had been on the Arizona Cardinals practice squad, would not be at practice Thursday.
