Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is still smarting from the 49-17 blowout loss to the Saints Nov. 10 when his unit allowed a franchise-record 625 yards and an NFL-record 40 first downs.

“It definitely motivates you to play a good game, no doubt,” Kiffin told reporters after practice Wednesday “Bad games aren’t a lot of fun, I’ll tell you that right now.”

Kiffin is hopeful for the Cowboys will be better against the Giants on Sunday because off the work the coaches put in during last week’s bye and the return of several injured players to the lineup.

But he also knows that improvement is a must if the Cowboys hope to save their season and it won’t come through magic.

“Sometimes you go so fast from Sunday to Sunday, Sunday to Sunday and here comes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and this and that, now we can sit back,” Kiffin said. “We had a good walk-through on the field with our staff and everybody. Then we got the guys back and re-evaluated some stuff, work your cut-ups in how we attack and what they’re doing.”

“There’s no [such] thing as magic,” Kiffin concluded. “We’ve just got to do a better job. We’ve all got to do a better job.”

Kiffin’s unit ranks last in the league against the pass and total yards allowed.
