The Cowboys had a feeling the Rams were going to try a trick play on special teams, so when they pulled a fake punt in the first quarter, it didn’t surprise them.

“Just from the coach’s past,” punt returner Dwayne Harris said.

The Cowboys stopped the play, in part because the Rams punter overthrew the receiver. Harris was breaking on the ball and almost intercepted the pass.

“The punter, he rose up. He didn’t act like he was going to kick it,” Harris said. “I knew something was up. I didn’t know what was going on. I saw the guy running a route. My job is to come up and make the tackle. As soon as I saw the ball thrown, I saw it was overthrown.”

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the result of the play, in the Cowboys’ favor, was a momentum point in the game. The Rams had taken over after the Cowboys had committed a special teams blunder themselves.

“Jeff Fisher’s obviously a great football coach and has been for a long time. His special teams units have always had some kind of a gadget to them whenever we’ve played them in the past. That’s kind of a signature of his,” Garrett said. “We really emphasized that last week in practice. I think our guys were aware that might be a possibility in the ballgame. I thought they did a good job of taking that to the game and making a big stop for us.”
