Ryan Williams still believes in himself. Despite his career not working out in Arizona, which made him the 38th overall pick in 2011, the former Virginia Tech star believes he still has a future in the NFL.
The Cowboys also believe that, and a deal could be consummated later today.
"One thing about me, I’m never going to quit, especially with this dream man," Williams said Saturday. "I want to be great. I’m going to fight until I can’t fight no more."
Williams worked out for the Cowboys on Saturday, and at one point, executive vice president Stephen Jones watched along with 23 scouts, coaches and other staff. Rookie quarterback Dustin Vaughan was called over to work with Williams.
The Cowboys have serious interest in Williams, according to a source, though a contract has not been finalized yet. Dallas had four running backs on its roster last season, with DeMarco Murray, Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar returning this season. Texas A&M's Ben Malena and Baylor's Glasco Martin are on the roster as undrafted free agents.
With 90 players on their roster, the Cowboys would have to release a player before adding Williams.
"It was an impressive workout," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of Williams. "He did a nice job. We thought a lot of him coming out of school a couple, three years ago. He's had some injuries in Arizona and hasn't played as much as I think they probably thought he would, but he's certainly an impressive guy. What we saw on tape when he was playing was some pretty good stuff, even though the numbers didn't back it up, and then you saw that kind of movement today in the workout."
The Cardinals released Williams earlier this week, and the Cowboys were his first workout. He played only five games in three seasons, because of injuries that included a ruptured patella tendon in his right knee and a shoulder injury. He gained 164 yards on 58 carries.
"I don’t know why," Williams said when asked why things didn't work out in Arizona. "Things happen. It’s a business. I’m not trying to figure out why. ...I moved on. I can’t go back in the building and get my spot back."
