The Cowboys are in the same place with Sean Lee that they are with Tony Romo: They hope their middle linebacker can return, but he hasn't been cleared by doctors, forcing the team to make backup plans.

Lee has missed the past two games with a sprained ligament in his neck.

"I think the better way to answer your question is: What does it do if he can play?" Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM when asked about the possibility of Lee not playing. "Of course he’s our quarterback on defense. ...Boy, when you have the turnover we’ve had at that position [linebacker], you’ve really compromised your defense. And yes, yes, yes, that’s happened to us. So just immediately in being there and coming in and being that quarterback would give us a lift. Obviously, he’s also a fantastic producer player, very productive, and if we could get him on the field that would be a real positive. But that’s a question mark at this particular time and in no way has he been cleared to play."

With Ernie Sims and Justin Durant also injured, rookie DeVonte Holloman replaced Lee on Sunday. He played 59 of 66 plays and made six tackles. Sims should be closer to returning after missing last week's game with a groin injury.

Lee missed two games with a hamstring injury before returning against the Bears on Dec. 9. He left that game with the neck injury and has not been back on the field since.

Lee has missed 17 of a possible 63 games in his career with injuries.
