Jason Witten might be considered one of the all-time great tight ends one day. He’s putting up numbers that could land him in Canton at some point. He should pass 10,000 receiving yards for his career early this season and is in good shape to finish with at least 1,000 receptions in his career. But Witten admires several of his peers and hopes to be in their category by the end of his career. His personal top-five at the position:

1 Kellen Winslow Sr.: “More than anything, he was the first one to revolutionize the position and show you could have mismatches. He was too big, too strong for safeties and too athletic for linebackers. I think he was the first one to change the game from that standpoint.”

2 Jay Novacek: “The thing that stood out about Jay is that if it was third-and-6, everyone in the stadium knew where the ball was going and you still couldn’t stop him. He was the first guy that I think kept the chains going and created that mismatch.”

3 Tony Gonzalez: “Well, I mean, he’s the best ever. To do it as long as he did at the level he did is … incredible. Every time he lined up, it was a mismatch.”

4 Shannon Sharpe: “Shannon was just the guy that put tight ends on the map. Not only was he good, but he wasn’t afraid to tell you how good he was. He was athletic. He definitely had a lot of success but wasn’t afraid to tell anyone how successful he was.”

5 Mike Ditka: “Going way back here, but he was just tough, hard-nosed. I love the way he played the game.”

I have Ditka and Mackey on top because they changed the position forever. Ditka was the #1 or #2 receiving threat on his team. Mackey was #3 or #4. I still think Mackey was the best. No one back then was that big and fast or could block like he did. Witten just doesn't go back that far. It's like my Grandmother telling me about Jack Dempsey or even Joe Louis. I didn't get to see those guys fight in real time except a washed up Louis. It just doesn't compute.

I don't blame Witten for naming KW as #1. He was the architect of the modern receiving TE. I see Witten and Gonzalez as similar players. I'd put Novacek in that mold although he's more a hybrid like Shannon and KW were than Witten is.

Tony Gonzalez should be the top guy.

Is there any doubt Witten is a HOF guy? The sentence reads he could get there.

Witten should go to the HOF but you never know with Cowboys involved. He's averaging 80 receptions a year. He has the second most receptions by a TE in NFL history. He's 32 with roughly 4-5 more years left (IMO). That gives him roughly 300-400 more receptions. That'll get him close to Gonzalez.

The hate is strong! But I would hope that Witten being the classy guy and tough SOB that the haters will see him as just a Football player and not hold it against him. We need more balance in the voting

He was paying tribute to his friend Novacek.

Good list though.

Just can't help but love Witten.
