Jerry Jones says the Cowboys looked at Tavon Austin “hard” in the draft last April.
They didn’t go get him, but Jones said the Cowboys might have their own versions of the speedy jitterbug.
“If we can keep him holding the ball, Dunbar can do some of that stuff for us,” Jones said on his KRLD 105.3 FM "The Fan" radio show Friday morning. “Now he’s got some of that, he’s a playmaker. You may say, ‘Well, he may not be him.’ But still, he’s got that big playmaking ability in there. We look for some of those. Beasley in a little bit of a way has got some of that.”
First of course, Lance Dunbar has to hold on to the ball, as Jones mentioned. The running back fumbled his second touch last week against Kansas City. Secondly, Cole Beasley has to get on the field. The second-year receiver from SMU was inactive for the Giants and Chiefs games.
“Yeah, we liked him,” Jones said of Austin, who went at pick No. 8 to the Rams. The Cowboys traded their spot at 18 to move down to 31 and wait for Wisconsin center Travis Frederick.
“You’ve got to have a spot for him with what we’re doing, but we had a spot for him,” Jones said of Austin, who caught his first two touchdown passes last week. “He’s a playmaker. … So in the draft room you look at it, and you know that you’re getting a player that to some degree is a specialist – to some degree. But by the same token, he’s an inordinate playmaker. And we all know we’d like to increase the big plays.
“We looked at him hard.”
