The Cowboys released safety Will Allen on Tuesday, two games after he lost his starting job to rookie J.J. Wilcox.
Allen, a 10-year veteran, signed with the Cowboys as a free agent, in part as a safety net and also because he had played for new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin in Tampa Bay, where he was drafted in 2004.
Allen started the first two games and had an interception in the season opener against the New York Giants. But he was out of position on some plays as the Cowboys gave up more than 400 yards passing to Eli Manning. Last week, Allen had a holding penalty on a kickoff return.
He had 17 tackles and two pass breakups in five games with the Cowboys.
